we’re likely looking at a 4 seed unless we win the SEC tournament which is possible.

Year after year people say this and year after year they continue to be wrong. Selection committee puts next to zero stock on conference tourneys.

Yep, I'm convinced seeding is done before the tourneys are finished.

I don’t think they put much stock into Saturday or Sunday but I do think winning on Friday matters

Yeah it can sometimes help those right on the bubble if it’s neck and neck with a couple teams, but after that they aren’t concerned with what happens. A&M a couple years ago is a prime example of them not caring about if you make a run in the tourney.

Agreed. I think higher seeds are set. The tournament matters for NCAA seeding for those bubble teams.

Rankings update after last nights game

NET 7
KenPom 6

SEC standing 5th, however I think we move up to at worst 4 possibly 3rd unless some way take some terrible loss.

Bama fan I know says they are 1st in the country in offense and rated 70th at defense.

I believe 20-20 is the rule.

Not looking great for them.

I think that is the rule for national champs but not necessarily on making a run

Crazy how good the SEC is gotten. A team with our metrics would have won the SEC going away in like 2016

Big money and big time coaches. Plus kids know they can be on TV every game and not have to go to Duke, UK, or Kansas to be on most games

The fact that we couldn't stop the white kid was a bit diappointing. We never fouled him hard. We sorta just watched him take over.

Knecht is one of the best players in the country, and top 2-3 is the SEC. He's been storming up the NBA draft boards, and is solidly in the top 15 draft picks (and moving up). Nobody is stopping him, particularly when he is shooting as hot as he was last night. That kid is a hard working beast.

KenPom has them the #1 team on offense by a mile and then 99th on defense. They are a team no one wants to see because of their scoring output, but they are also a team that could lose to almost any team in a tournament setting because if they have an off night on offense, they do not have the defense to fend the other team off. They have so many shooters though they can stand for a couple guys to have off nights and still beat weaker opponents.

The 20-20 thing has to do with championships like nyc said.

This is probably more of a factor than we realize. We’ve grown accustomed to being able to watch every game but I remember that not being the case.

Yes, but he averages 20. We let him get twice that. He went to the goal a few times and we didn't even try to stop him. It was just kinda odd to watch. He outscored out whole team 25-21 down the stretch.

And at the time that was happening the refs were calling fouls every time Tenn got breathed on. It's not a coincidence that at the same time their offense exploded. Both teams were in the freaking double bonus with like ten minutes left in the game.

My major complaint is that we didn't go after him on defense to try and get him in more foul trouble, that's the bigger issue to me.

Outside of the two possessions where we stupidly went zone, we didn't play poor defense on Knecht really. He was just insane and hitting a ton of crazy contested shots.

When we started doubling and ball denying we got a few stops, just waited way too late to do that.

The thing that gets me is we got called for phantom fouls while Tennessee was setting moving screens, lunging into players on screens and Knecht literally shoved one of our players hard enough to drive him back 2/3 feet and get him on his heels before driving around him. No foul on any of that.

Yeah, it got pretty stupid towards the end. I thought they were fairly balanced for most the game, but the last 5-6 minutes of the game the refs went really lopsided in favor of the Vols. Especially the last 3 minutes.

I think what killed us is that we thought we could do a decent job on him with our best defenders 1v1.
Bringing a second defender is something you have to have in your gameplan/scout in the days leading up to the game to really do it effectively. You CAN make the change mid-game but it's just dangerous because you have to talk recovery, no-leave shooters, lob threats.. etc.

So when we realized we just couldn't stop him, we were hesitant to immediately go to the double. I think if we see them again in the tourney and he starts getting hot we will be ready.

In the last 12 minutes of gametime - some of it was zone defense (as mentioned), some was him just driving at the basket, but most of it was Knecht hitting tough shot after tough shot against good defense. Just gotta tip your cap at that and double on the next possession.
