Dont understand the vote of no confidence from some of our Auburn faithful around here. Care to explain?

I will preface by saying I think Steele is a decent fit for Auburn and it is just that I don't love the hire.

Here are some reasons that this doesn't seem like a great hire

-Kevin Steele has no track record of being anything but an average DC
-Kevin Steele only has 4 years total of being a DC despite his touted "experience"

-Steele has never had a top 25 defense according to S&P
-Every team has improved defensively after Steele has left/been demoted
-Teams typically don't fight too hard to retain Steele

The thing that really is confusing is we pay Steele as a top 3 DC + buyout his contract. Given the possible hotseat for Gus + our O/D dynamic, maybe we had to pay that much money for even average guys. Who knows.

Until LSU, whose coach was basically publicly fired only to be saved pays less money to Dave Aranda, a better DC with better history

I just keep remembering the 70-0 beat down clemson took in the Orange bowl from West Virginia a few years ago. He was the DC and they had NO CLUE.

While Steele coached the bowl game, I believe the rumor was he was informed he'd be terminated before the game so he probably did a ¯\_(?)_/¯

Granted his defenses sucked that year before WVU

Not necessarily. Kevin Steele has a reputation of being a great teacher of fundamentals, getting players to play tough and the basics of playing defense. Given Auburn's refusal to do any of those things for the past 6 years, he may be exactly what the doctor called for

Think about how Muschamp started to generate pass rush by moving guys like Cass McKinzy into creative roles and blitzes. It wasn't ideal but definitely better than we ever could have expected

Kevin Steele won't do that. If our players can't win their matchups, we are screwed

He may not be a bad hire but for now, his reputation as DC is tainted in my book because of the ORANGE BOWL pounding he took. Overall, he doesn't appear to relate to the players very well either. Don't know why. Hope I'm wrong for my own blood pressure's sake.

70-33, but close enough

That one single game when he knew he was about to be gone, the fact he was a shitty HC at Baylor, him being DC at Bama in 2007 before Saban had a chance to bring his guys in, and being at LSU last season when they had the least amount of defensive talent they've had since about 2000... Are all reasons for his bad rep.

It's weird because he's been at multiple good programs but has had bad timing with them. The fact Saban hired him onto his staff twice is enough to tell me he's not a bad defensive coach.

Ya, but to qualify this statement it should be pointed out he was effectively demoted from DC and brought in as a position coach/recruiter the second time

I just don't see him as a top 10-15 DC. We should be able to bring in at least a top 10-15 DC if we are throwing around top 3 DC money

Les is/was on a bigger hot seat than Gus and they got Dave Arranda for less money.

LSU and Les are perceived to be more stable than Auburn and Gus in the coaching community...plus there might be truth to the good DC's don't want to coach on teams that run O's like Gus.

Are you seriously suggesting that Les Miles, the guy that LSU admin leaked was fired in the middle of the year, is considered "more stable?"

If you want to put them on the same level of hot seat, so be it. You must be taking some serious acid to think that Gus is on a significantly hotter seat

Some Auburn fans are just going to bitch.

I am hoping he is what we need. I am taking a wait and see approach.

Well Arranda turned down Auburn and didn't turn down LSU.

Also, LSU's AD worked into Arranda's contract that he will be at LSU for the next three years regardless of any HC firings or not. So Les's stability issue was completely bypassed.

Arranda isn't the only guy, just an example. The #10-15 highest paid DCs make about $750k. I have a hard time believing Kevin Steele is the best we can come up with when we essentially are doubling or better 95% of DCs salaries

They gave him a 3 year contract with no reduced buyout which means if Les is fired and he is not retained, they owe him some $4.5mil (9 years coaching at Wiscy)

He might be a perfect DC for Gus, tho. In theory, we just need an average D (assuming our O is clicking). Gus' future won't depend on Steele. If our O returns to 13-14 level, we will be fine.

this is where i'm at. I think we will be much improved based solely on the talent and experience we return.
