The big issue city council seems to ignore is the developers dramatically increasing supply of apartments/ "beds" for college students. I remember a recent study said there are some 2-3 beds for every college student.
I should have clarified my post. A business needs to go where chevron is like a bar or a restaurant. You are correct in there being more than enough housing which is putting more low (read no) income people into the city. The city council only sees $$ and not how those $$ are going to actually come in the city.

Why are yall sitting on Alabaster? Did you grow up there in the 90s when it sucks and had nothing to do but go eat at Tasty's or that Chinese place by the thrift store?
Oh I forgot that it's become a cultural hotspot with Lonestar, McDonalds, a generic shopping mall, Buffalo Wild Wings, and Ruby Tuesdays.

Has anyone been to the Cumberland strip in Knoxville next to the UT campus.
Here is a little taste.
It sucks, and with the way Auburn is going, we might end up creating our own Cumberland strip down College in a decade or so.

I don't care about the Newks/CVS type areas as long as it is away from the heart of downtown.
Scares me that they replaced the bank vault with Pieology. That type of generic BS chain in the heart of downtown

Thank goodness none of this is going to impact the classiness of my hometown, Opelika.
When people across the U.S. ask about Opelika, I just tell them it's more or less like Greenwich, CT or Buckhead or Santa Monica.

As long as we get a Cook-Out I might be convinced.

Agreed. I actually like that little compound. Something like that was definitely needed and that location isn't bad.
I'm with you though, the direction they are trying to go with downtown is just terrible.

Stop shopping at those places and they will go away. Patronise only the local business and they will stay.
As a small business owner in the retail business, convincing people to buy local can be a challenge.

No one seems to understand this.

My issue is if what is brought in doesn't compliment the downtown feel.
For example, look at Moe's Barbeque downtown. Even without the bar part, it feels like something that would be in a college downtown. They purposefully altered the restaurant as their other locations (BHam Lakeside/Patton Creek) are generic BBQ
Contrast that to Pieology, which gutted a historic building and removed the vault from the historic bank.

You'd be amazed at some of the conversations we've had over the years. My wife and I are talking just tonight about a fund raiser for a local park we want to do. You think our big box competitors are doing that? Nope.

Not my favorite but it is solid place downtown. Why do you hate it?

Fastest growing: Auburn
Of the ten largest cities in Alabama, none is growing faster than Auburn, a college town rapidly evolving into a small city.
Auburn, according to Census reports released today, has been adding hundreds and even thousands of people with each passing year to now reach 62,000 residents. That's up from 53,000 just five years ago.
The remarkable 16.3 percent increase over five years has pushed Auburn past Decatur as the state's eighth largest city.
"When it comes down to it Auburn is just a great place to be," said city manager Charlie Duggan Jr., who said many choose Auburn because of the schools, because it's safe, and because it's near the university.
If Auburn continues at this rate it would pass Dothan, the state's seventh largest city, by the 2020 Census

No doubt Auburn has grown tremendously since I graduated there. I barely recognize the place.

Even in the past 5 years, it seems way different. I like a ton of the development that has occurred sans apartment-topia.
As long sa there is a concerted effort to maintain the Auburn feeling downtown + college town feel overall, I'm fine. I like having Tigertown, I like new trendy restaurants and I like not having to go to Atlanta/Montgomery for things not sold at Walmart

Here are some positive Auburn happenings I've noticed in the past 5 years.
1. Demo of motel next to Alumni Center
2. Renovation and reopening of Hamilton's (great corner spot)
3. Opening of The Hound
4. Opening of Acrea
5. Opening of The Depot

I think overall downtown AU has improved. I do have concerns going forward after the Bank Vault to Pieology event

Yep, still pissed that the planners allowed that. And I will refuse to eat there.

When you drive by Pieology now, it literally looks like a POS cement building. Just looks terrible with no character
