There were plenty of condos available after the real estate crash for $60k and above. I wish I had gotten one then. I looked pretty hard, but had to invest in something else instead. When the student loan bubble pops, there should be plenty of good real estate deals to be had in Auburn and every other college town.

Not my favorite but it is solid place downtown. Why do you hate it?

Overpriced and overrated. I'm just tired of people in Auburn hyping that place up because I think it sucks.

Here are some positive Auburn happenings I've noticed in the past 5 years.

1. Demo of motel next to Alumni Center
2. Renovation and reopening of Hamilton's (great corner spot)
3. Opening of The Hound
4. Opening of Acrea
5. Opening of The Depot

I've lived here 6 years now and agree with this list. The Hound is awesome and keeps that local feel everyone here wants. i haven't been to acre or depot. complain about corporatizing all we want but destroying that motel for a CVS was a good thing

I wouldn't worry too much about pieology. They will be out of business soon enough. That place sucks and I never see anyone going there. I also know they way overpaid for it.

There are still thos good local places around. I ate Sheila C's last night which used to be a crappy buffalo connection. Auburn is growing a lot because it's a great place to raise a family, which is why I'm still here. There is no stopping it so the city just needs to embrace that and not let it outgrow itself to become one big traffic jam. If we need to bulldoze a chain though, let it be moes southwest People here keep telling me that place is good and it is nothing but pure garbage. And just because the chips are free doesn't make the rest of the horseshite taste better.

I like the food I get but it definitely isn't as good as other places in that price range. Not hype worthy at all

The only Auburn restaurant that should be considered high end dining, maybe Maestro. Amsterdam, Hamiltons, Hound etc arent upscale dining anywhere except Auburn

acre

I was told it was expensive for the amount you get which didn't entice me to go but I also heard it was good

Amsterdam

It's ok but also overhyped

The Depot should be included and Opelika has some quality restaurants now (from almost zero in the past), Cafe 123 and Warehouse Bistro

Amsterdam was THE high end dining experience when I was there. Think they added Botchers my junior year. Is that place still around?

No.

The only high end places in Auburn are The Depot, Amsterdam, Acre, and Maestro.

Fun fact, the guys who own the Hound wanted a more upscale restaurant which is why they opened up the Depot.

I'm going to take a tone different from most in this thread. I absolutely love the evolution Auburn is taking especially downtown and I hope to see the commercialization continue because it's a sign of a healthy town economically. Of course it sucks to see places like BBQ House and The Vault close but in 20 years there will be a business that has taken its place in Auburn's reputation of hometown eateries.

I will say the lack of turnover in apartment complexes down Glenn is disturbing but Auburn does have city ordinances that will eventually restrict developments from expanding further into the city. Within the next 10 years developers won't have a choice but to tear down the old Glenn apartments if they want to build new condos.

The South College issue doesn't worry me. It's not a highly desirable area to live and hasn't been as long as I've known it.

Also The Depot is the best place to eat in Auburn and if you disagree with me then you're wrong.

I agree-I dont mind CVS and some of the chain places, especially when we still have some great local places in the area as well.

The socioeconomic status of the population that fills what is left behind by the new complexes is what concerns me. We'll see...

I don't think anyone seems to be complaining about growth, just that it needs to be done right. The city sometimes choose money grabs instead of facilitating the optimal growth strategy

There is a reason business desire to be downtown Auburn. If they don't adapt to the Auburn culture, downtown sucks and then nobody wants to continue growing the area.

Think about it this way, there is nothing unique about the physical location of Charleston or the businesses there. Charleston however has a lot of growth, great economy and is tons of development.

It is because Charleston has a unique culture that sets it apart. If you walk down Kings St, you see that companies build inside the framework of that culture. When that happens, the development adds not detracts.

Auburn is adding things like Pieology that tears the fabric apart instead of adding new threads and growing it. Imagine taking out Toomers Lemonade and replacing it with a Cook Out. Everyone loves Cookout but definitely would ruin downtown
