Guard Grad Transfer Candidate
Baylor SG Al Freeman - 6'3 205LB (11ppg 3rpg), Former ESPN 100 recruit and can shoot + slash. Probably plays 2 but out of HS some thought he could play 3 as well

Not sure how accurate but there is a report that we've offered 2017 PG Jamari Wheeler. He's a 3* that's committed to Duquesne

ESPN's Recruiting/Scouting Report
quote:
Strengths: Wheeler long wiry vocal point guard that is an excellent athlete. He is very quick and has a non stop motor. His handle is tight which allows him to push the ball and beat defenders. Wheeler is a good advance passer on the break as well. He can get to the rim and finish. Wheeler is an excellent penetrator and drive draw and kick passer including the ability to be a very good post feeder. Wheeler works on the defensive end as well. He pressures the ball and does a great job of staying in front t of the ball. We like how Wheeler plays in attack mode on both ends.
Weaknesses: Wheeler will need to add strength and continue to develop as a shooter. Extend his range and continue to work and fine tune his pull up jumper all in which he is very capable.
Bottom Line: Wheeler is a true point guard with the speed and quickness to positively affect the game for his team. His talent and feel along with his upside make him a potential high major guard with continued development not to mention his excellent upside.

Hard to say, these analysis reports by ESPN normally are always positive sounding and judge based on what level they expect them to play.
Really means that they don't expect him to be a difference maker right away at a bigger school

If we take this kid would we play Mitchell at the 2?

That or redshirt this kid. I imagine Mitchell gets PG minutes regardless, just is allowed to have a smoother adjustment by not having all our backup PG eggs in his basket

Just my thoughts but I'm perplexed as to why we would take this kid.
For one, we would be sacrificing a spot in our 2018 class and we're recruiting players more talented than him. So the fact we're even considering this doesn't give me the warm fuzzies about where we stand with certain prospects in next year's class or even the potential of signing a GT Combo Guard that would take up a scholarship for only a year.
For two, his game is like a watered down version of Mitchell's. It'll be hard for him to ever get meaningful minutes on this team, especially if our recruiting continues at the level it has been on.
Maybe BP wants someone he can develop, someone who doesn't demand playing time but i see Wheeler as nothing but a four year bench player at best.

I wouldn't be surprised if Davion Mitchell didn't start at 1, with Harper backing him up and playing the 2 sparingly on occasion. He is undersized playing the 2.

You should rephrase this without the double negative. I am confused as to what you are talking about

Bruce was fine with Tahj playing the 2. I realize we were in more of a bind, but it is college not NBA. If he can defend opposing 2s it doens't matter much

Today is the 1st I had heard of Wheeler but from what I've gathered the offer is legit and the staff thinks they've found a hidden gem. We needed another perimeter player that could play pg. I along with most assumed it would come from the grad transfer pool but just based on the little I've heard I think it's going to be Wheeler. I'm not going to lie though. The though of us relying on 2 freshman and the Harper I saw last season doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies.

We have 3 scholarships, I don't see any reason to think we can't still bring in a backcourt player grad transfer w/ Wheeler
Posted on 3/31/17 at 2:57 pm to GenesChin
True. I had heard though that we were looking at adding a developmental big out of high school and I think this pretty much rules that out unless there is another scholarship that they think will open up next year from our current roster. I guess Heron could decide 2 years is enough and declare after next season but based off what I've seen I think he needs more time than just 2 years.

What's up with this Garrison Brooks wanting a release from MSU?

I'm not sure. That whole deal came out of left field. I remember there being a lot of people talking about something shady going on when his mother didn't even attend his signing ceremony. I chalked it up to bad blood between her and the dad(who is on staff at MSU)but now I'm not so sure.
ETA I just saw this posted from Stephen Hooks. He is a pretty vocal booster and is close to the staff.

He never ever wanted to go there. It was nasty what went down behind the scenes on this. His mom refused to attend his signing.

Is unc still a possibility for him?

So he didn't want to go there and his mom didn't want him to either?
If something shady comes out would be still be eligible elsewhere?

My bad. I was saying that I believe DM will be starting at the 1, sooner rather than later and not playing nearly as much at the 2.

Not saying you but there are many, many people that don't understand what kind of leap it is between high school and college. I'm not saying he won't play the 2 at all but he does not have the prototypical size for a 2 in college ball. 6'1 185 isn't very big in college.
