Changing our shoe company isn't going to bring us to the tournament though. It won't bring us elite players because we aren't a good program regardless and it won't magically help the team play better
You want to go to the tourny as a shite program, you need a good coach. That is how it works.

Get off of the damn shoe thing. You are a broken record. The UA thing does hurt us. If you don't believe anybody, listen to Barkley and one of our former players. Their shoes don't fit as well as other brands. It's no secret. Again, if we start going to the tourney on the reg, it will not be an issue.

Changing the subject because no one is going to agree and it's pointless to argue this...I don't know if it's possible but I want Larry Brown. He's at SMU right now.
Posted on 3/13/14 at 1:13 am to DecaturAU
I would LOVE to get Larry Brown. We have just as good a shot of getting Phil Jackson, IMO. If the Bruce Pearl is on our list rumors are true, I want him. He would bring us instant cred with recruits.
.......and we were paying Barbee just as much as Pearl was making at UT.

Larry Brown has a great thing going at SMU and has signed some great classes. Have a hard time believing he gives that gig up. I wish. I love watching him with the Pistons
Not the Knicks though

Seriously, Ben Howland, he brought NORTHERN ARIZONA to the NCAA tournament, rebuilt that Pittsburgh team when they were on a 6 or 7 year dry spell and then wen to the final four twice with UCLA
Quality coach, success everywhere and reasonable chance of hiring him

I've just never been a fan of him. He had so much talent out at UCLA and never won it. Never have liked him though.

Hard to win every year. Made it two the final 4 twice, Championship game and a few 16s. Also, won Pac-12 four times as well.
Also wen to Sweet 16 twice with Pitt and that started their era of great basketball (were bad for 6 or so years before Howland)
The thing is, guys you "like" aren't coming to AU. Otherwise they would be elsewhere.

quote:Agreed. He is the only established quality coach we have any shot with. I'm not a JJ guy but AU is such a chitty Basketball job right now that only realistic options are guys past their prime nobody wants or roll the dice with a guy even before he becomes noticed as an up and comer coach. It's possible JJ screws it up but if we get what most people consider a dud I'm not going to Auto lay it at JJ's feet.
Ben Howland is the best coach available
There is a coach I'm excited about looking at who has name recognition in basketball. Coach K Disciple Tommy Amaker. Yes I know he bombed out at Michigan but he's done well at Harvard. Counting this year. Haaaaarvard has been to 5 straight post season Tourneys including 3 straight NCAA tourneys when you count winning the Ivy League this year. They also won their 1st round game as a 14 seed last year. Like I said I know he bombed out at Michigan but history is full of coaches who have bombed early in their careers to become good coaches. I know TA could very well bomb again coming back to a bigger conference but given what he is doing at Haaaarvard and actual legitimate candidates that would actually take the AU job (he may not either) I think he is worth giving a chance. In his last 3 years at Harvard TA is 72-19 (win percentage of 79% & 3 NCAA Tourney bids with 1 win). In Barbee's last 3 years at UTEP he was 68-35 (win percentage of 66% & 1 NCAA Tourney bid)

Hasn't been good since the 80s. Cliff Ellis was clearly just a miracle maker

Been discussed a bit. Amaker's wife is a tenured professor in Psychology at Harvard. That is a huge deal and I would be shocked if we could pull that off. It wouldn't be an elite move for Amaker but his wife has an elite job at the moment. Would they be willing to spend the season apart?

quote:No but for a coach that can recruit it would make the talent pool to choose from much greater. The UA sitch is real per college coaches spoken to by Ryan Brown of WJOX. Coach K or Wooden himself would even struggle at AU in the current climate.
Changing our shoe company isn't going to bring us to the tournament though.

quote:Not likely in yet. They have a lot of work left to do in their conference tourney. They are in the last 4 out on ESPN as well as on Bracketmatrix.com which has been the best predictor on teams making the tourney the past few years.
St Johns is likely making the tourny this year after making only once in the past decade under UA. They also signed a 5* kid last year
quote:They fell apart because Rick Majerus retired. Even then I would say they were a good but not great program. RM was very underrated. The shoe sponsor alone will not decide a team's yearly fate. As with anything else in sports it takes coaching as well as the Jimmys and Joes to be succesful. The point is however and it can not be denied is the Jimmy and Joe pool is much much less at a UA school as opposed to a Nike or Addidas School. I love AU to death but if I were a good coach there is no way I would take the AU job without at least 1 change from the AU admin. Either change the basketball shoe contract or drop the Southeast AAU ban. Taking the AU job right now is career suicide for the majority of coaches out there.
Utah is finally rebuilding under Under Armour after they fell apart under the old sponsor despite having a great program.

I can definitely understand this. If we drop the AAU ban and somehow repair our relationship with Komara, I think the shoe deal isn't a big deal.
I can definitely understand an argument based on, we can't recruit local AAU teams that otherwise would be receptive to AU and it is near impossible to break into Nike Adidas AAU as a non traditional power who rocks UnderArmour
I believe those two things compound each other

Not necessarily. If you trust in your coaching ability and know you can put a fundamentally sound team or something like what Nevada Smith does in the Dleague which is win by unconventional play, there is a huge opportunity at AU.
The SEC is easily the weakest major conference. You could easily get a well coached team to the NIT and in the first few years.
