This team has all the pieces and depth, but they sure looked like they had a hangover at MSU. Perhaps, bama cracked their confidence. Or maybe, MSU's D got their goat, but horrible cold 3's are a mojo killer.

I think its definitely still possible we get it together and figure out a way to make a run but I'm not expecting it anymore.
I think our expectations as fans were sky high and the lads just looked out of sync for whatever reason against bama and MSU. Before they were on fire and looked to be going to the moon. We were all dreaming of 2019 and beyond. Maybe it will all gel.

Part of the problem is just the difference between football and other sports, too. It’s just not realistic to believe any basketball team is going to go undefeated in conference play. A realistic goal for a contender is winning all games at home and splitting on the road. Right now, we’re right on schedule for that.
Some of these posters probably expect the baseball team to win ‘em all, too.

I’d rather be disappointed in nearly February that we “might not” be a 3 seed than the previous 50 years of AU basketball- that was “Hot Garbage.”

ETA I think Bruce is above average with high energy teams but not a great coach.

For real-
AU had a collective 10 - ten- seasons worth mentioning since 1906 (1906!!!) prior to Bruce.
1928
1960
1984
1985
1986
1987
1988
1999
2000
2003
Since Bruce got here we’ve been to the tournament 4 times- would’ve been 5 if the 2000 tournament was played. A final four, an AP #1 ranking, a regular season title and a tournament title.
Bruce has won more games than the previous two coaches combined.
Folks- chill.

Not reading this thread because I know it’s full of ignorance but I’d just recommend relaxing. The story isn’t written on this team yet and there is a very high ceiling. It’s January. We have a layup game midweek and then 3 straight Q1 opportunities right after.

I will absolutely agree with that.

I started at AU in 1986 during the Sonny Smith years. And you can tell by that list, which years he was there. Then we had the Tommy Joe Eagles before landing Cliff Ellis and some of his teams are on that list.
The 80's we had Dye as football HC, Hal Baird over the baseball team and Sonny Smith over the basketball program. What a time to be at AU.
Looks like we are heading that way with Freeze (football), Bruce (basketball) and Butch (baseball). Competitive in all three major sports.

Bo, Barkley, and The Big Hurt.
They helped also.

Also our women's BB teams were competitive and were at times fun to watch. I was there from 84-88 and like you said it was good times.

I went to more women’s games than men’s games when I was at AU. Chantel Tremitiere is one of my favorite Auburn athletes ever.

I’ll second that on Chantel, but from those teams my Honorable Mention goes to Ruthie Bolton…she was scrappy as all get out & could press as good as the best in the game at the time.
Coach Ciampi had a great run over those years.

Greatest girls high school player I ever saw made it to AU and I think her finesse game didn’t translate.
Tonya Tice. At the time the best handles on a girl I ever witnessed in high school she could get anywhere on the court she wanted. In today’s game she would have been a superstar. Hamilton High school most of her career but transferred to Pell City either her junior or senior season.

I have watched (in person or on TV) almost every basketball game since I was at Auburn in the 80’s.
I have never ONCE been frustrated with Bruce Pearl as our coach.
He is, to Auburn basketball, what Pat Dye was to Auburn football.
I respect legends that are also Auburn men.
So, to quote Ricky Bobby….
With all due respect, and remember I'm saying with all due respect, your opinion ain't worth a velvet painting of a whale and a dolphin getting it on.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t try to add Mel Rosen (Track) into that group from the 80’s.
Coach Rosen is right up there among the legacy of legendary Auburn athletic coaches.
