...that we'd be going to the Sugar Bowl and S&P ranks our defense as the number 8 defense in the nation and that we were ranked #14 in the second to last CFP rankings, what would you say?

And then I tell you that we were 8-4 with a terrible offense that can hardly get a first down....

I feel like I'm in bizzarro world or something

If you had told me we would lose to terrible UGA team again, I could have done something a hellava lot better than watching sh*t show of a game.

Would you also have told us that in three of the losses, our offense would look like cancer?

You left out the part about one of our RBs tying Bo's record for consecutive games >150 yards rushing - after our coaches didn't give him a single carry in the season opener...

And in at least two of the wins.

I feel like we're in the Twilight Zone. When did Tubs possess Gus' body? He's even starting to pick his nose on the sideline all the time like Tubs.

I was talking to KK about Gus on the twitterz

Whether you want to admit it or not, Gus appears to be extremely close to being an elite coach. It is just the guy's ego/stubborness that causes him to refuse to further innovate his offense + refuse to admit he needs QB development/talent evaluation help

We seem to have assembled a quality coaching staff, we have talented depth at nearly every position group and the program as a whole seems to have a good foundation.

Yep. We can all sit here and see a path that can make him a great coach, there are plenty of coaches you can't do that with. Most of the tools are there. It wouldn't be a monumental step. We sometimes forget how new he is to college coaching.

Sorry. I don't see elite potential with Gus although I guess it depends how you define "elite."

For me, the following coaches are arguably elite: Harbaugh, Richt, Les Miles, Chris Petersen, Jimbo Fischer, Dabo swinney and Stoops. Saban and Urban Meyer are in a super elite category.

Here's my report card for Gus:

Expertise in defense and special teams: -average to below average
Recruiting (especially QB): average to below average
Development of skill players especially QB: significantly below average
In game offensive adjustments: average
Team morale: average

On positive side:

Ability to attract quality asst coaches: excellent
Development of offensive schemes: excellent.

In summary, Gus is either a very average SEC head coach or an excellent O coordinator (on par with Lane Kiffin without moral shortcomings).

You really consider Harbaugh, Richt, Miles and Dabo 'elite'?

Based on what, exactly?

I'd say consistent and/or repeated demonstration of coaching excellence.

Quantitatively, I would say being consistently in top 10 and habitually having 10+ win seasons.

It is surreal.

Highs and lows.

Pettway was definitely a high point.

The defense was such a nice surprise as well.

The offense and qb situation was a fricking nightmare.

You don't consider Harbaugh elite? I hate the guy but he definitely is in the elite category. He has ~.700 CFB win% and .690 NFL win%, and has turned around every program he has had his hands on

Coaching Stops

-San Diego - First coach to win 10+, consecutive 11 win seasons
-Stanford inherited team with 5 straight losing records, set school record for most wins in a season (12)
-SanFran 49ers inherited team off 8 straight losing seasons and has 69% Win%, 2 divisional titles, NFC Champion and no losing seasons
-Michigan - First consecutive 10+ win seasons in almost 15 years for Michigan

Guess it depends on your definition of elite.

I consider multiple P5 championships a criteria.

Harbaugh: 0
Richt: 2
Miles: 2
Dabo: 2

Combined, those four have played for 3 NCs (Miles in '07 and '11, Dabo in '15) and won 1 (Miles in '07) in a combined 45 full seasons at the P5 level (Dabo has a chance this year, provided he wins his 3rd ACC title, which is hardly a given).

Leslie is the only one that I think could arguably called 'elite'. If Dabo goes all the way this year I'd think he could also break into that status.

He has won multiple divisional titles in the NFL + made a superbowl and 3 NFC championships
