I was setting at the opposite end, so I could not see what was happening. I have not watched the replay yet, and probably will not be able to stomach it. From what i saw it looked like Nick went up to the line to call and audible, but in the gif it looks like he was going to go under center? If so, is that the first time all year? I don't remember Nick under center, if that is the case that is a poor time to try it for the first time live.

I don't think NM had any intention of going under center and Reese didn't either.

The only thing I can think of is the nobody else moved even after the ball was snapped. It was just odd. There were 50+ seconds left but maybe Reese though they were going to go fast.

heard that the ATM line was yelling out calls at Reese and that's why he hiked it.

That's what i was thinking. Figured the A&M D line was barking the snap count, especially when the Refs gathered up to talk after the play. I was waiting on a flag but instead they come back and say A&M ball.

Is this a violation?

Yes. Nubs accused Sparty of it earlier this year (clapping):

What does the NCAA rulebook say on pre-snap defensive regulations? Rule 7, Section 1, Article 5, Subpart A states: “No player shall use words or signals that disconcert opponents when they are preparing to put the ball in play. No player may call defensive signals that simulate the sound or cadence of (or otherwise interfere with) offensive starting signals. An official shall sound his whistle immediately.” Freep.com sent a request for clarification to Bill Carollo, the Big Ten’s coordinator of officials, and Big Ten spokesman Scott Chipman answered by noting that clapping is not specifically part of it. “In general,” Chipman said, “if a player is using words or signals to disconcert an opponent, there would be a warning and then a penalty if it continued.” -

This is probably a dumb question, but I will ask anyway:

Should AU not have been flagged for a false start since our offensive lineman were not set? I haven't had it in me to go back and watch the play, but I feel like some of our lineman were standing up turning towards the sideline when the ball was snapped.

didn't even think of that, but that's a good point.

Brandon Marcello just confirmed on his weekly chat that the refs did miss throwing a flag on AU when the offensive lineman weren't set.

I feel like I've seen similar plays called an Illegal Snap when only the center seems to do something early, or it gets called a false start. I guess maybe it's the difference between actually snapping the ball and starting to and not? I don't know, but I was hoping for some sort of penalty to save our asses that never happened...oh well, bet it never happens again.

If a flag was thrown on us, it would have been an illegal procedure (all 11 not set), illegal shift (2 in motion at snap), or illegal motion (Marshall moving forward at snap). None of the 3 are dead ball fouls like false start. Illegal snap/snap infraction is a dead ball penalty, but that applies only to simulating snap or other illegal actions by center. Unfortunately, snapping the ball at an absurd moment is not a penalty, just a bad mistake.
