From an article I read last night.... Mitchell was in an argument with someone, and a third person pulled a gun out and started shooting.

Will be arraigned at 3:00, bond up to $500,000. Hope they revoke bond, but that is doubtful

I saw the following post on Facebook from a black male with his perspective on the shooting and he brings up some very valid points:
Johnathan Gentry
R.I.P Jakell Mitchell. 18 year old Auburn University football player who was shot & killed early this morning. Just like I keep saying! When will you blind, race card pulling "Black life matter" protesting Hypocrites WAKE UP & see the struggle we have amongst ourselves & community? Your silly "Black life matter" protest & marches don't mean NOTHING when we keep killing each other (with no regard). Jakell Mitchell didn't even get to live out his dreams because it was cut short by his own. When will you people WAKE UP!? You protesting, marching hypocrites! His life mattered too!!!
R.I.P Jakell Mitchell

Mr. Gentry hits the nail squarely. Hopefully more young people will continue to speak out against this cycle of violence.

Gus Malzahn says no players live in Tiger Lodge complex and no other players were at party.

Question, can people not be upset about both? Is that not allowed?

I suppose you can be upset about anything you feel the need to be. I think his point was one situation vastly outweighs the other in terms of life loss. I'd contend one action leads to a higher rate of the other happening, I'll let you decide what I mean.

You mean black on black crime leads to increased racial profiling and as a result angry, distrustful citizens respond negatively to biased, poorly trained officers in turn creating a systematic cycle of violence that benefits no one

My favorite Chappel show skit was, I Know Black People. The last question was, "How can black people overcome?" and the correct answer was, "They can't." There's no magic solution, explanation, or reason that will magically "fix" the black community. Continually droning on about black on black crime is nothing more than a dog whistle at this point and I'm just tired of hearing it tbh

Yes, something along those lines.

That's the problem, we don't drone on about it. You hear very, very little about it in the media. If you speak publicly about it, you're labeled a racist. "Political correctness" has stagnated anything fruitful that would come from such a public discussion. As it is now, the only opinion you're allowed to have is that African Americans are where they are due to all external forces.

There've been several community prayer rally events in Birmingham this year surrounding inner city crime. I also remember hearing something about a non-violent pledge for City youth. This was all within the last year or so. Both of these initiatives were sponsored by the Police Department and local politicians if I'm not mistaken. This is just in Birmingham but I'm sure such efforts are not unique to the city.

I believe the black community is very aware of black on black crime and work to address the issue. Maybe the issue should be with MSM (liberal and conservative) for not highlighting these efforts. That's why I call it a dog whistle. It's an issue that easily riles up the target audience with minimal effort needed.

This will never happen. There is zero money to be made on this.

The media is so much more powerful than we give them credit/blame for. Particularly MSM which is driven by ratings and advertising dollars. The newspaper business has been all but eradicated and as they transition to digital media they are consumed with page views and clicks. Whatever your belief there is a mainstream publication, outlet, ect that caters to and reinforces your point of view. For those lacking critical thinking and basic reasoning this leads to an atmosphere of distrust, bias, and group think.

I am very grateful for social media (Facebook excluded) and even tRant/tigerdroppings. I may not agree with you all but if nothing else it prevents me from becoming wrapped up in my own beliefs and ideals.

If, in fact, "black lives matter", then yes, you should absolutely be upset about both.

ALEXANDER CITY, Alabama -- Slain Auburn University football player Jakell Mitchell was armed with a handgun and exchanged gunfire with the man accused of killing him at a Dec. 14 off-campus party, an Auburn police detective says.

Detective Dustin Holt said in a Monday morning court hearing that witnesses saw Mitchell with a gun during an argument with Markale Hart, 22, at the Tiger Lodge apartments in Auburn. Mitchell suffered multiple gunshot wounds at the scene and was transported to East Alabama Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Where are the statistics supporting the narrative of biased, profiling police officers gunning down innocent people of any color/race/creed/nationality? Keep in mind that innocent means just that. Not people who died resisting arrest and such. But just got shot walking down the road, minding their own business...(I'll hang up and wait.)

Maybe just stick the topic and not try to make this more than it is? Surely there is another board for this kind of stuff.
