what does it say about NM's catchable passes?

It says Marshall has thrown 60 catchable passes to Coats this year, but Coats has only caught 30 of them for 687 yards and is averaging 22 yards per catch while averaging 11 yards per target.

"Catchable" is very subjective is would seem. I know I have not seen 30 blatant drops/misses by Sammie. 1-2 a game, yeah, but 30 just seems ridiculously high from what I can recall.

If it's within an arms length it's considered catchable. It doesnt have to physically touch his hands to be considered a target. Over thrown passes, passes that fall short or are thrown out of bounds are not counted.

Not that I disagree with it being somewhat subjective, passes defended are in this stat line also. They see the WR as a position that should play physical and go up and get the ball when thrown his way.... so your 1-2 possible drops a game are pretty much on point. You could consider 50% of those 30 missed opportunity as being passes defended.

But, Marshall has to get the ball there for those things to happen, which backs up my statement about him not getting the credit he deserves.

DQ quotes per AUC (some is different than the set of quotes per AUR) LINK

quote:

Right now, Auburn and LSU are "half and half,

LSU has got two thousand-yard receivers, and with [offensive coordinator] Cam Cameron coming back that's big," Williams said. "Auburn has got a lot to offer. But right now, they just run the ball too much for me, from what I've been seeing the whole season.

final decision the "Monday after the Iron Bowl

I'm very cool with Coach Craig," Williams said. "He's someone I can talk to about stuff besides football. I can talk to him about my off-the-field things. He's a good coach.

Basically, they're saying, 'Don't worry, we are going to get the ball in your hands when you get here,' " Williams said. "But really, I'm going off what I'm seeing, not what I'm hearing.

Auburn is recruiting him hardest, Williams added.

"They don't want to lose me," Williams said. "If they lose me, they'll have to play against me.

They're telling me about their balance," Williams said. "They have a thousand-yard rusher, and two thousand-yard receivers. That speaks for itself.

Auburn is going to have to throw the ball, because Alabama is big on the defensive line and has good linebackers," Williams said. "They've got to throw it. I'm looking forward to seeing them throw the ball.

Not going to force myself here. just looking for a fun discussion. What, if anything, do you guys make of him making a final decision after the Iron Bowl but before his LSU visit? Also as a recruiter, how do you honestly say a big reason we run so much is because our WRs do not catch the ball no where near as consistently as you can? would you worry about that getting back to your current WRs and hurting team morale on some level?

Our players have to already know they don't catch at reasonable rates

Why would he visit LSU if his final decision is Auburn? Doesn't look good.

No you don't bad mouth your WRs.

True but if it's viewed as bad mouthing them as Weagle points out then is it wrong to do as he says?

I will proudly trust whatever the coaches do but for me personally I have changed my mind on DQ. He has some characteristics too similar to TO and Randy Moss for my taste. As of today he is a me player and not a we player and might be that way to an extreme level. He strikes me as a Randy Moss type that will not give effort if he is not getting the ball, run blocking for example (To TO's credit he played hard every play even if he did mouth off a lot.). I can also see him causing team chemistry issues by complaining similar to TO if he is not getting enough touches for his taste. In the end DQ is extremely talented and would be a great addition if he accepted his role with the team. However I think having DQ would do more harm than good overall in the 2014 season for the team so I would be cool if things work for him and LSU.

I see where you can get that feeling, but keep in mind he isn't part of any team yet. I certainly understand the kid wanting to go where he'll be fed the ball. Something tells me if your scenario were to play out, Gus would nip it in the bud pretty fast.

My opinion on him is if he comes great. If he doesn't, I don't really give a shite.

IMO, our receivers can't catch a cold half the time, but we have thrown the ball in the past with reliable receivers. D.Adams in 2010, and somewhat Blake after. I don't have stats in front of me, and I'm too lazy to look them up, but maybe that staff can look back to that as they sell us to him.

Eta: I'm with Weagle, if he comes great, if not...

I just don't like the idea of what it appears he is doing. He is coming across like he will hold his commitment hostage and force or staff to throw in the biggest game of the season to appease him instead of to win the game. I know it will probably be tough to run on Bama but if for whatever reason we are succesful running the ball we should keep running the ball like we have all year because that is what the 2013 Auburn offense does best. If he does not understand that then Auburn may not be the best place for him for all parties concerned.

He is just parroting what he has been told by LSU coaches. Now D. Craig has to sell him again on AU.

DQ sounds like a me me me type of player. Don't think I've ever heard him say the word "team". I don't care much for his attitude no matter how good he thinks he is. But, hey, that's just me.

But again, if Marshall can't get them the ball regularly, none of the physical traits matter.

I know its hard to sell kids on POTENTIAL, but the reality is that Marshall will be the best *returning* QB in the SEC next year. The stats may say different but, no, I just don't consider Bo Wallace to be a better QB than Marshall. Matt Mauk COULD be.

I think a full offseason in the S&C program along with a Spring with Gus/Lashlee *and* summer QB/WR workouts will take our passing game to another level. A player like DW can make that level even higher. Hopefully CDC can convince DW of that. (Oh, and showing solid run-blocking skills as a big, talented receiver? That does nothing but INCREASE your value at the next level.)

But DW or not, we will pass more effectively next year, kids. Count on it.
