Froholdt will be fine. I went back and watched the OL play from the game. Froholdt had one mishap. Overall he played great.

Gibson and Clary played well. Both in Pass Pro and Run.

Colton Jackson was the weak link. He did some good things, but I don't think he will cut it. Definitely got whooped a few times.

Definitely.

Here were my thoughts on the OL play from another thread, specifically touching on those three, which align with yours.

quote:

Clary was actually pretty decent, and did reasonably well in the run game. He had a few missed assignments, but nothing out of the ordinary for a true freshman in his first action. We ran behind him on the first touchdown (5 yard run by Whaley), and Kendrick Jackson and Cantrell also did a great job making that play happen. He had a few key blocks on some of Hayden's runs in the 2nd quarter.

[Colton] Jackson is a liability, no way to sugar coat it, and it stands out on tape. He got turned around and worked in pass pro several times, most notably on Austin's first interception (however, upon a pretty thorough viewing, that pick is on Allen - his arm was well in motion before getting hit, and it was uncatchable for Stewart). Also, he took several bad angles in the running game and missed his assignment on a few plays. He missed his man on the 3rd and 1 play on our first drive, and Kendrick Jackson had to pick him up, which led to the outside linebacker coming free to hit Whaley for a 1 yard loss to force a punt.

Froholdt looked pretty solid, especially in the running game. Hopefully he's taken that developmental step forward from year 1 to year 2.

Yeah he was, but it's just crazy the upperclassmen are getting beat by a walk on true fr and a kid from Denmark who never played.

Thought K. Rich would move to Pulley's spot.

Kam Curl will be legit, Dad was a coach, he has speed.

TCU will pick on him. Won't cost us a loss, but Fatass could.

Agreed.

Like I've said on a few prior occasions, I'm deeply concerned that in year 5 our OL consists of a converted DT, a former walk-on, and a true freshman walk-on, and formerly heralded 4 stars like Merrick and Wallace apparently haven't developed and can't get on the field.

Hell, Froholdt might be our second best lineman.

OL is an area where we've actually done a pretty decent job of recruiting on paper over the course of the Bielema era, but they just haven't panned out lately.

We need to start recruiting linemen with better hips and foot work. Seems like our struggles have a lot to do with guys who cant move as well as needed. But what do I know.

Bert is so obsessed with size and mass it seems like he has overlooked the most important part of an Olineman's game, footwork, flexibility, and leverage.

You can have massive dudes, but they better be able to move. It's why most NFL offensive lineman are pretty lean and mean looking now. Magic number seems to be about 6-4, 6-5 about 310 -
315 and guards about 6-2, 6-3 about 305-ish.

It seems our goal is to make them all 335 and just mash on opponents in tbe run game.

It's probably also why out OLine is ALWAYS gassed in the 4th qtr. They're all carrying 10-15 lbs more than they should be

Dude, this is year 5, although I count it as year 3

Bert is starting a freshman Blue Shirt on the OL.

So much wrong with this statement it's straight up potato.

We are starting probably the smallest line we've had since Bielema's been here.

Clary is much smaller than Merrick. Jackson is leaner and more athletic than Wallace. Gibson looks like he's lost 30 lbs. Did you even watch the game?

The only bad play on the offensive line this past game was at left tackle..... and it isn't because Jackson is some blobby fat turd - he just doesn't have the mental reaction time.

I'm ok with the O-Line and CB's
the baffling thing to me is that Brandon Martin hasn't cracked the WR rotation. He was supposed to be the stud and Nance the supporting cast.... seems to be the other way around.

I think we'll see them use Whaley more this week given it will likely be a much more competitive game.

Bert and Smith's rub with Martin is his weight and knowing the playbook. I'm guessing it's mainly the latter, but they've mentioned the former as well.

Reports out of fall camp were that he hadn't progressed at all like they were hoping he would. Who knows how much of that was simply them trying light a fire under him by calling him out.

The Oline looked shaky. I'm just baffled by Brian Wallace in general. I was expecting him to be a stud.

Wallace not being able to break into the starting rotation of a weak line is definitely puzzling, but Merrick is the one who really has me scratching my head. He was a huge get in recruiting and was supposed to be the next Denver Kirkland, but he's barely breaking the 2 deep.
