Sounds like AF basic is completely different from when I went in some 24 years ago.

Yeah, it was all folding shirts very neatly when I went in '04.

Air Force basic is basically going to school while getting a wake up call with a trumpet at 0445 with a little drill in between with some really loud teachers. The TI's can't curse or belittle you anymore so the intimidation factor is almost completely gone. Their favorite words now are piss and weird. It was cake except for the folding. I've never been good at folding anything so my shirts and socks were always destroyed when they'd do inspections.

That actually sounds amazing. What I had planned to do if I couldn't get enough aid to get into Fayetteville straight up was go to Jonesboro for a year, maintain good grades then apply for a transfer scholly to U of A. My brother's doing the exact same thing right now with Southwest Mizzou State and Mizzou. But I've been to Harrison and actually have a few friends there. Played their basketball team in high school and ended up making a few friends at a tournament there. One thing is that I'm not in my teens anymore. I'm 21 turning 22 in December. I'm not sure how that affects college sports if it even does. I'm not sure if I'd be considered a non-traditional student as well. Either way, being able to play ball again would be awesome.

You're in your teens? If you get claimed by your parents on their taxes your max student loans you can get out will be 6,500 per year. 3,250 per semester plus if you are eligible for the lottery scholarship.

Yeah once you are an established Soldier, Airman, Marine...etc it is harder for them to release you, but when you're a trainee they'll kick your arse out for anything.

Yep. There's this thing called Early Listment Separation (ELS). That they can use within the first 60 days you start getting paid (basically within BMT). It's technically a discharge, but there's way less to it so they can get you out quicker. I was discharged in a week and a half after my trip to the hospital. They wasted no time. I left basic 4 weeks before my flight even graduates.

The biggest insults i recall were "nut" and "female" (to the girls, that is; and they made it sound terrible). Our TI was pretty chill, but we had a sub for about a week that cussed me out pretty good when I showed him my conjunctivitis. The sub had a reputation, and he didn't disappoint.

When I was in Army basic training back in 2002 people were getting kicked out for dumb shite and they needed soldiers badly. Once the demand for soldiers goes down, they look for anything to get you out.

also I missed out on the GI Bill discussion. I have two kickers on my GI Bill and I opted for the post/911. I get $1509 a month in BAH for Fort Smith. I chose the post/911 originally because the online school I started at wanted money upfront. The benefit of the Montgomery is that you can exhaust it and still get 1 year of the post/911, but with the 911 is once it is exhausted that's it.

Unfortunately you are shite out of luck, but that has probably already been discussed. Good luck from now on.

That'll make it easier for you actually. Your parent's income is counted up to age 24. Do the first year or two on the cheap, then when you're ready to transfer into Fville you'll be right at the age where you can get max assistance.

This is all assuming your parents won't be writing tuition checks and covering your rent and bills. Harrison is only an hour and a half from Fayetteville and Springfield, the Buffalo river is really close, Table Rock and Bull Shoals are really close, Eureka Springs is 35 minutes away. Jobs are kinda hard to come by but Fed Ex Freight is based there, I never had any luck with them but I made more money doing my own thing anyways.

Oh and being 22, you'll slay local poon. Just slay it son! Those girls are quick to get their hooks in a guy that appears to have something going in his life, you'll have to come up with a killer crazy story why you got discharged instead of a bee sting though. Tell 'em some other enlistee went crazy during the first live firing drill and you had to tussle with him to get him to quit shooting at people and accidents happen but the gov't kept it hush hush and found a reason to exclude you.

Lets be honest here Drew. I have no doubt you have a good future ahead of you. You seem to have your head on a heck of a lot straighter than most kids your age i know. So things will work out on the school/money end. Here is the concern i would have if i was you.

WARNING FOR LADIES: CONTENT BELOW IS OT TYPE STUFF

I have always been told that when a soldier goes to basic he is given a shot that does a multitude of things, including possibly causing the nether regions to stop standing at attention. If said rumor is true i hope you raised 10 kinds of heck because the real sucky part of it all is that means no action to relieve anger and frustration for at least another week or so.

Our TI was pretty chill
I had 6 different TI's in 3 weeks. Our main TI took leave the day after we got there so we had a rotating door of TI's until he got. We learned to appreciate it because when he got back we found out we had one of the toughest TI's there was. Even during Airman's time it was intense. Dude never let up and could intimidate you just by looking in your general direction. He'd been deployed to Iraq 6 times and you could definitely tell he'd been through some serious shite. Intense barely does him justice.

I got like 6 different shots. Pretty sure one of them gave me strep. One of the older flights said the shot that's supposed to "prevent" respiratory infections actually gives you a sore throat to add to the stress. Our whole flight was coughing and sniffling for like a week after that. As far as effecting the nether regions, I haven't had any issues.

On a military note. I had the pleasure if meeting 12 of the 80 living Congressional Medal of Honor recipients yesterday. Was extremely humbling.

If you're considering Jonesboro, why not consider NWACC or UAFS? Every class you need for the first two years of almost any degree at the U of A will be there and will teach the same material for cheaper. Then transfer in for your last two years where it gets specific to your degree and where the school and its resources start to matter more.

Idk how they did the shots at AF Basic but in Parris Island I swear they stuck it as hard as they could and where they thought a bone would be. I had bruises from all of them lol

Best suggestion so far. You're a hog fan and would be able to be close AND not have to live in Jonesboro or Ft. Smith. Those places are dumps.
