Mike is never going to be one to 'run plays', as confirmed by B Portis. His MO is defensive pressure to create run out turnovers and score off those. When we don't do that, we are in a world of shite, especially against a team that runs a patient, set play, low turnover offense.

Which, as I've been saying since he was hired, is no longer a consistent recipe for success. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but players' ability to beat the press with the dribble has improved dramatically over the years. Big guys are much more adept at being able to dribble the ball without kicking it out of bounds. Just seems like the way things are going...even your big men need to be skilled.

With that, unfortunately for Mike and the Hogs, is a decreased probability of forcing enough turnovers every game to put your team in a position to win...without some better talent.

MA will never be a great coach, particularly with fundamentals, but these improvements would vastly improve his program.

Too many people confuse ideology with fundamentals.

Mike, and Nolan before him, know all the fundamentals, each teach the fundamentals and correct technique of the game, the idea that neither know the game to this level is laughable at best.

Here are the facts on the program since 1995:

Nolan Richardson: 124-73 (.629) 54-42 and (.563) in SEC play.

Average of 20.67 wins a season.

5 NCAA Tourneys, 1 NIT

Stan Heath - 5 Seasons 82-71 (.536) Overall and 31-49 (.388) in the SEC. Average of 16.5 Wins .

2 NCAA Tourney Appearances, 1 declined NIT because of tired legs

John Pelphrey - 4 Seasons 69-59 (.539) overall and 25-39 (.391) in the SEC. One NCAA in four years. An average of 17.3 wins per season.

One NCAA Appearance

Mike Anderson - 4 Seasons, 86-48 (.642) overall and 39-31 (.557) in the SEC. An average of 21.5 wins per season.

One NCAA and one NIT in four years.

For not being as fundamentally sound as the coaches who came from fundamentally sound coaching trees of Izzo and Donovan while not having an ace recruiter like the two prior was said to have on his staff he has the program outperforming the prior two.

But hey, even Donovan bounced around in the NIT and had losing seasons following his NCs.

He doesn't have to have an offense comprised of entirely set plays like Heath had.

He runs an offense and uses sets in situations during the game (BLOBs, final possessions of halves, etc).

Several other coaches have done the same as him, the majority of the most successful coaches on the NCAA level ran offenses not sets.

The purpose of the press isn't only for turnovers, it is to increase the tempo of the game and create extra possessions during the game for extra scoring opportunities, this is why shots with less than 10 off the shot clock isn't a big deal to him, why Arkansas can be one of the higher scoring teams in the NCAA while not having the highest of offensive efficiency.

It is the same strategy (increased possessions leading to increased scoring opportunities while increasing mental and physical fatigue on the opponent) used in HUNH offenses in football.

Knowing it and coaching it are two separate things. And no, his teams overall are not fundamentally sound the way I'd like to see them play. And comparing Nolan and Mike with jokers in between sets an extremely low bar.

That said, the college game overall isn't where I'd like to see it either. And the bloody refs are terrible, across all of NCAA. They call a tricky tack foul one minute and then allow an assault the next trip down the court. No way games can have a consistent flow.
