Wonder why he went in as enlisted instead of officer training?

Yet his brother has to live in the communist state... Cal Berkley.... Why? ... Because our fat dumbass coach did not offer him, nor numerous other Arkansas natives...

Going in as an infantry officer he would see all the action he wants just in a leadership position.

They changed the combat uniform again? Still sucks, but it’s not as useless or as much of a detriment as the digital pixelated ACU’s I had to wear.

Smart officers do time as an enlisted soldier before going the OCS route and being commissioned that way. Gains you way more street cred with the troops.

Still others choose to simply remain non-commissioned because they like the rank and file life better. Remember Pat Tillman? If I remember correctly he was an E5 when he was killed in combat.

I just looked it up. He was an E4. Corporal. Promoted posthumously too. So he was just a specialist.
Anyways, point being, a lot of folks elect to go that route.
When you're in the infantry, it's smart to do time non-commissioned before getting your bars. A butter bar, as we called them, are generally looked down upon even worse than an E1 private.

ETA:Notice though that he is already ranked as an E4 even though he just completed basic. That's his degree at work there. He will likely make E5 within a year. If he decides to remain non-commissioned chances are he will fast track up the ranks and be throwing a lot of weight around pretty quickly.
