I remember seeing people get all worked up about bench numbers under Veltkamp, all the while not realizing bench numbers don't mean crap. Squat means everything in football, especially on the lines where long arms are assets in play but liability when working maxing on bench press.
Same thing with squat.
Hodge is what 6'-6'1"?
Smothers is what 6'4" - 6'5"?
Shorter legs and bodies are going to have an advantage in squat just like a guy with shorter arms has an advantage in bench.
Nothing to see here.
550 lbs is fine for an OL. Remember you still got to be able to move them feet, move laterally, and pull.

Day 4 updates from 247:
Chaney said that they had a much better practice today as far as execution. They had a sloppy day yesterday across the board, but much better today. Brandon Allen had one pick yesterday, but he's performed overall well. The tight ends have progressed, and he said Hunter has practiced well. There isn't one player in particular that he wants to single out right now for their performance.
A surprise here. Michael Smith just said Drew Morgan is running with ones. He said of all his guys right now Drew is playing best of all
Smith said Jojo will play this year and really help on special teams. He said right now there is some punt returners ahead of him, but said his DB background allows him to be force on STs overall
He said they want to get Kendrick Edwards up to 220, at 200 right now
Coach Pittman said that they have very high expectations for the offensive line at Arkansas. He said if they don't go out there and dominate then they didn't meet their expectations. He said that didn't happen on Wednesday. Said it was better today.
The depth chart at punt returner in this order is
1. DJ Dean
2. Jared Cornelius
3. Jojo Robinson
Kody Walker said he took all the first team snaps at FB today
He said Colquitt has looked good but still a freshman with plenty to learn. Kody said he came in with a new mentality this fall from the spring.
Barry Lunney gave a great illustration of BA at QB
He said the first year in an offense is like being an 18 year old driver. You have both hands on the wheel and are concerned about the breaks and watching the road.
At 49 he said you are on the phone, putting on make up or whatever.
He said this is Allen's second year and like and like an experienced driver you are more comfortable.
BA said his desire for Saturday's scrimmage is to have clean one for the offense.

Updates from Dalton Person in 247:
Kody Walker said that the backs have really taken on the mantra of RBU. He said he reminds them of it every day and that it's a point of pride.
Sam Pittman said that Jefferson's biggest problems have come in adjusting from a three step attack to a two step attack on the offensive line. Jefferson is still taking reps with the twos and has to win the position, but Pittman reiterated that he's a very good player. As for Tretola, they love his strength and physicality. He will contribute this year, but not sure yet how much he will. Pittman said that he needs to lose a few pounds.
As a group, he's been pleased with Ragnow, Charpentier, Smothers, and Cook this week. They move of Gradu Ollison was the players idea and that the coaches thought it was worth giving a shot.
Hunter Henry's knee hindered him last year, but Lunney said he's a very tough player. Right now he needs to focus on mastering the play book, but he understands it much better this year than just a year ago.
Drew Morgan said one of his personal goals is is to get 20-30 catches this year. To play as much as he did last year without any catches, it's his goal to catch some balls. The experience he gained from it was very valuable.
The receivers are really all competing at some different spots, both with the ones and twos. Drew Morgan is still taking some reps with the ones at slot and working with Keon at flanker (Z).
As for the young guys, Morgan was very complimentary of Cornelius, JoJo, and Edwards. He said Edwards at 6-6 has some serious athleticism an could have gone and played basketball if he wanted. JoJo brings some real quickness. The Miami boys play a different type of ball, he said, but they've gotten much more discipline and are adjusting. And Jared is one of his good friends but they're competing for a spot at slot so on the field it's competitive between them.
AJ Derby hasn't played at all at quarterback yet, but he's still expected to know the playbook. He's playing around 250-255. I'll have more on him in the morning.
Chaney said that BA has thrown 180-200 balls and he believes he's only had the one pick.
Pittman compared Wallace to a young colt. He said his feet are all over the place right now but they're fast as heck.
The OL coach is very high on Ragnow. He said that he's done a "tremendous" job with the twos at center, and it's a very tough spot for a young guy to play.

I can't help but to expect him to be starting by the end of the year.

Barry needs to work on his allegories.

so no Kendrick Payne on the official roster.
Did I miss something? Thought he had coaches praising him in the spring. Maybe not getting a scholly caused to have to go DII where he could get a check?

I've been wondering what happened to him as well. He ran with the 1's all spring. He may have been homesick since he was from California?

heard today Chris Jones isn't with the team right now but is with the team...

Has anyone seen anything about Denzell Evans or Juan Day? How are they looking?
Posted on 8/7/14 at 9:55 pm to ocelot4ark
Looking pretty invisible. Day was pegged as a RS from day 1 like Evans was.
As long as there are no injuries it's going to be awfully hard for anyone to get carries from our 3 headed monster in the backfield. Those RB's aren't getting any respect, but what's new pussycat?
