Just joined the YMCA at Pinnacle in Rogers on Monday. NWA deal piggy has a 3 month special for a family that covers the $75 joining fee and normal $60/month for $127.00.

43 years old 6'1 - 227# Going 4 times this week and just doing cardio to get my heart used to this crap again.

ETA: Just came across this article on the risks of sedentary jobs. I really need to get up an move more during the day. Workouts can't undo damage from sitting all day.

Crud, I'm very sedentary at work. Active at home but sedentary at work.

Maybe I need to have my desk raised to where I am standing most of the time. I have a conference table in my office if I need to have a sit down with people.

I've taken one of the suggestions in the article, and started taking the stairs to another floor whenever I need to use the restroom. Given all the water I drink, that's pretty often!

We'll see how long I keep it up!

Do I still need to move around at work if I walk half a mile and stand on a subway for 20 minutes each way to/from work?

I'm guessing yes. At least when I'm on clinical coverage I have to get up a few times for physics checks, but that's only one day a week.

If you're sedentary inbetween - yep.

From the article:

quote:

The way Dr. Levine describes it, sitting isn't pretty. The body’s metabolic engines go to sleep. The muscles stop moving all together and the heart slows. Then, the body's calorie-burning rate plummets to about one calorie per minute -- a third of what it would be if you were walking. Insulin effectiveness drops and the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes rises. Fat and cholesterol levels rise too.

So the key is to do some sort of activity to break up the periods of sitting.

This is what I do. I take breaks and do burpees or something to get my heart rate going for a bit.

Lame! Well because of that article I did some squats, jumping jacks, and shadow boxing in the bathroom.

For lunch I am eating leftover homemade curry that my fiancee cooked last night. It's got shrimp, broccoli, avocado, carrots, radishes, and sunflower seeds on basmati rice. Produce and spices are from the Indian/Bangladeshi market that's near our apartment. It's so good

IMO, diet is key. Second is getting active and doing so consistently.

Debating on Insanity. It will get me through until it warms up outside.

Well the image of a grown man who's wearing business clothing standing in a bathroom and shadow boxing is pretty funny.

Fortunately it's a single-occupant bathroom so no one could walk in and catch me staring in the mirror and panting for air.

I was just about to ask that question! I just kept imagining the look on my co-workers faces if they walked in on me doing that in front of our sinks.

This is the one that got me.

I was imagining it as multiple occupant though and someone walking in on you shadow boxing in the mirror at yourself.

ETA: Did you walk out panting for air?

Yeah, and my hair was all disheveled. Not really, I gathered myself before I went back to my desk.

I'll ask her if she can write it up when I get home. She probably can't give a precise recipe because she isn't one to measure things, but she can probably at least give you the ingredients and their relative quantities.

anyone an under pronator?? I under pronate and hit hard at the front. I have shoes I love for running, but I need something different for my training. My running shoes are a bit big which is great when running, but not so much for what I do with my trainer.
