We have a habit of making mediocre pitchers look like steroid era Roger Clemens.

He threw that same pitch like 9 straight times and nobody could touch it. None of this is great.

Embarrassing at home against a mediocre Gator team.

Diggs just flips a coin before the ball is released as to whether he’s going to swing or not. It’s the only explanation.

Smith goes 7, gives up 0 earned runs, and still won't get a decision.

If I'm Smith I don't say a word to anyone for a week.

I know this is weird to say given our record and ranking, but I’m under no illusion that this is an Omaha squad.

Our pitching (Hagen aside) has evened out, and this squad simply can’t hit the ball or score runs without being gifted base runners by way of walks, errors and HBP’s.

The level of opposing pitching is going to get better in the postseason and the charity runs will tail off, at which point we’re going to have to put a fricking barrel on a ball and knock runners in.

His plate approach has been atrocious this season.

He’s always been overly patient at the plate, but this year the book is out that he’ll look at 2 fastballs right down broadway and then chase low on 0-2 or 1-2. He basically becomes a guess hitter when behind in counts.

I think it is, but only because we're built so well for a tournament setting. Eventually we'll just outlast the competition we'll face in regionals with the parade of arms. The sheer amount of people we can call on to just throw strikes is abnormal for a college team. Supers is where I'll get a little nervous.

We're not hoisting anything if the hitting doesn't get better, though.

The problem is that we consistently use our two best pitchers in the same game.

Until I see our lineup stop taking Fridays off and afford us the ability to use Gaeckle in longer relief of Molina or Tygart given their inconsistency issues, I’ll be skeptical.

I fully expect us to play some team like Grand Canyon in game 1 of the regional and have to use Gaeckle because we’re in a 2-1 nail biter in the 8th because we can’t back up Hagen.

We’ve got to start putting a barrel on a ball.

We have way too good of a pitching staff to not go all the way, unfortunately we have this same old terrible offense. How does DVH not see the glaring weakness? I clearly still hope we win it all despite the offense. Maybe the pitching is just that good.

It is, and this is what people need to realize. We're the best pitching staff in the conference by almost an entire run per game over 2nd place. We don't just have "good" pitching. We have elite 'only one team every few years is this deep' type pitching.

I mean the offense has sucked all year and we've lost 6 games. We're not gonna run rule anyone but it's gonna be hell scoring more runs than us regardless.

The fact that McIntyre has been a bit shaky lately, DVH wasn't left much of a choice tonight.

Our defense is better than people realize.

It’s not a 4 shortstop infield like we had in 2022 with Moore, Battles, Wallace, and Stovall, but they have kept quite a few runs off the board, especially when Molina and Tygart can’t hit their spots and gift base runners.

Oh I definitely understand and agree with going to Gaeckle (I’d argue he’s our second best pitcher on this entire staff). I’m saying I wish we didn’t have to because I wish we’d give Hagen more run support in his starts and let him exit the game with a 5 or 6 run lead and have enough breathing room to be able to go to someone like Foutch or Coil.

Gaeckle is our first arm in a big situation. Mac is awesome but Gaeckle is the real deal. Big talent.

Stovall 2B
Sprague-Lott 3B
Aloy SS
McLaughlin 1B
Holt LF
Diggs RF
Wagner DH
Rowland C
Wilmsmeyer CF

Tygart P

I guess if you know you can’t have Hudson catch both games, you go with your lesser offensive catcher with your better starting arm (since Molina is out this weekend). But yikes seeing Rowland and Wilmseyer at 8/9 hurts my eyes.

I think we’re going to see Rowland catching Tygart for the time being.

I’d rather see Helfrick, but I don't think he and Tygart are on the same page when he’s catching. They obviously weren’t on the same page during Tygart’s outing against Alabama, and then DVH opted for Rowland to catch Tygart against South Carolina.

Generally speaking, the bottom of that lineup (Diggs, Wagner, Rowland, Underwhelmsmeyer) gives me a ton of pause. That’s a lot of strikeouts, and those 4 are hitting a combined .186 in SEC play.

At some point we are going to have to test Gaeckle going multiple times during a weekend. That's what a closer does.
