I'll say it. Nobody else will say it, but some are thinking it.
Hurts is good, but not great. He doesn't have the ability to throw the ball down the middle of the field. It was awful. I was embarrassed. The majority of his passes were less than 10 yards. What did they do all summer?
Don't blame the rush!!! This isn't a one game surprise - the last 4 games of the year he had problems.

My main thought is most Alabama fans don't know anything about football, see Clemson putting up 1000 points against the worst team in all football and it makes them dissatisfied with a 17 point win over a top 3 team, first game of the year with a new offensive staff. Hurts didn't have any time, when he did he made good throws. OL will be fine, won't see another d line like that until the playoffs, same can be said of the secondary. They fielded as many former 5 stars on defense as we did

Hurts is good at eluding the pass rush and against defenses that are not elite he can run all over them. I will give him that. I would hate being a wide receiver on this team though. They will all probably be elite blockers by midseason.

Did I miss a bunch of missed throws to the middle of the field? I don't remember seeing any attempted other than the deep touchdown pass.

quote:you did not. Easiest way to get a pick six is throwing into the middle of the field against a secondary like fsu. And yet that's what all these geniuses are wishing we had done, despite our winning the game handily playing it safe

I guess you don't remember 2013 v Virginia Tech. This was essentially the same game against a better oppnonent.
I also remember people freaking out Because the OL was terrible. They just needed time to gel, same with the 2014 OL and same with this years'.

You didn't miss anything.
There was NOT 1 pass attempt between the hashes.

The coaches don't have confidence in the QB to make those throws, at least to the right colored jersey.
edit: And that obviously cuts out a lot of our playbook. Arugably the best receivers in the country and we can't get it to them. Well, we will the next couple of games, and some folks will be proclaiming that the passing game is great. Then will come the tough defenses later in the schedule. Deja Vu

Agree with Monty. How on earth is Bo not living up to expectations? FSU is an elite defense. Harris had a little more success on the night and would be considered the hot hand. We know Bo is the real deal. In big games he was the fricking GOAT. I'm fine with how Jalen played, he didn't turn it over, he hit some good passes, he avoided the CONSTANT pressure, and we had 1 holding call which was total shite. Sure we can clean up a lot but frick it was the number 3 team and they were head to toe loaded.

Calvin showed signs of frustration during the game more than once.

MY bold prediction based on the first game is that the RT spot went to the more experienced guy for the first game just to get us through it. But he is too slow in pass pro. I predict we see the young kid get more and more snaps in games 2 and 3 and then see him starting by our next big game.

Not me. I'd be satisfied with a regular college football offense like when Coker, Sims and McCarron were here.

How great did McCarron look against LSU the first time?
Didn't Sims look pretty weak against WVU and LSU that year?
I recall Coker struggling against Tennessee, don't you?

I assure you, Calvin is fine and so are the other receivers. Next thing people will be saying is mutiny from receivers lol.

Or the second time for the matter(besides the last drive of course)

Every qb might have a bad game, or even a few bad games. Against good defenses, I don't think Hurts has had a good game yet. He appears still not to be able to read defenses, the coaches are afraid to even call some pass plays, put pressure on him and he can't check down on secondary and third receivers, etc.

My thoughts...
O-line needs some work. Could just need more game reps and improved calls at the line.
Jalen...TBD. Looked better at times...looked the same at times.
Daboll...Still wondering how he will turn out as a play caller. Was not impressed with the red zone calls.
Running game never really got established.
Super tough opponent, so it is hard to say 100% on any of them.

I mean, those are some ugly QB games you listed, and Hurts is on pace to destroy McElroy's record at this point. Just sayin
Hurts is a 2nd year starter, but still very young, though. He needs a few easy games to get comfortable in the pocket again.

Hurts will have to get better or continue to not turn the ball over.
He's still young, but he doesn't have good numbers against ranked opponents. Including last year, here are the numbers against ranked opponents(USC, LSU, AUB, FLA, WASH, CLEM, FSU):
84/149 - 56% comp
133 pass YPG
7TD/4INT
Being able to run with the ball makes these numbers bearable.

Where did I say he wasn't fine? I said he showed signs of frustration. You can see if plain as day.
