In the short term? No.

Longer term...If the philosophy is to start the senior-most player for the sake of seniority, yes it does matter. Eventually you'll run out of luck and gain the reputation for not desiring to develop QBs, which will hurt recruiting.

Its like a drug addict thats only living the next hit. I want to see the QB position perform as well and as long as the RB position historically has.

There's nothing wrong with wanting a multi-year starter who gives you a chance at back-to-back titles.

I'm pretty sure the staff just wants to win. It's up to the younger guys to step up and show that they give the team the best chance to win.

Bateman has two years so he could do that but I'd be just as happy with back-to-back titles with different starting QBs as I would be with the same starting QB. If we had started Bateman, Cornwell, or Barnett last year we might not be in the position to repeat this year.

Bateman, I don't see him being knocked off in fall camp. He is the upperclassman, and his style(for better or worse) will not lead to many bad stats in scrimmage work. Someone will have to swing hard to take him off the top.

The offense will probably be tooled more to Bateman if he indeed gets the nod. WCO small ball, which is kinda reliant on who is a RB and how well they play.

There's a reason the QB competition went several games into the season. In fact, I remember some thinking CB outplayed JC in the opener.

True...but I think that reason was Coker's inability to separate thimself.

Why does everyone think Barnett will start or even has a chance? He is last on the list right now, he has played terrible. Bateman today because of experience, Hurts if he gets a chance to duke it out.

Bateman and the passes more than 25 yds fall apart on him....
Barnett or Hurts!!!
Cornwell even though he seems to be wanting to stick it out in Tuscaloosa

The position is more unsettled than it has been the last couple of years

Say what? The position is more settled than it has been any summer since AJ graduated.

In the last two years, we haven't had a hint who would start the first game until late in the fall. Last year, there was still doubt until after the Ole Miss game. There certainly wasn't a clear leader after the spring.

This year the statement's already been made that if the season started today Bateman would get the nod. That isn't very unsettled at all. Unless he comes in and screws the pooch or someone else has an epiphany over the summer, Cooper Bateman will be Bama's starting QB when the season starts.

Bateman starts the year. This is the season the "safe" bet at QB bites us in the arse. We drop at least one game due to QB play. Bateman may not finish the year under center. We all know the criticisms on Cooper.

Barnett didn't blossom over the past year. Blame that on whoever or whatever you like, but SuperFrosh hasn't grasped the helm. Or the playbook.

Cornwell is just lost.

Hurts is the latest greatest thing and is SO athletic. He makes you drool when you think potential. But is he ready to handle the SEC as a freshman? Doubtful.

The competition will carry into the season like it always does and that's fine with me even though fans hate it. It keeps all of the QBs dialed in working hard, and it prevents valuable backups from transferring out. Smart move by Saban.

I think Bateman starts against USC and whether he keeps the job or not will depend on if he can grow into the position and become a leader like Sims and Coker did. If he shrinks, Blake will get his shot. I think Bateman is the safer choice at least early in the season. Blake has the big arm but he's been an absolute turnover machine in scrimmages both last year and this year which is a massive concern when you have a good defense and turnovers are almsot the only thing that will beat you.

As I've said all along, it's Bateman.

My depth chart prediction: Bateman, Hurts, Barnett, Cornwell. I also predict that the latter two will eventually transfer.
