Don't we predict that every year and every year our QBs can't hit water falling out of a boat?

Seriously though, find me a guy who is 90% from inside 40 yards and less than 20% outside of 40 yards. Then we don't even have to make decisions.

You've just 'bout described Adam Griffith from last year...but nobody seemed to like him. He was 86% inside 40 and 43% outside 40...

after a few practices and assuming fitzmagic goes back to CB. HOw do you xperts see the DB two depth chart? I think Fitz.......easily replaces Hump and we have a much better starting CB. TB may move to safety but plays in nickle and dime for sure

I actually think Averett will be our number 1 corner and I think Minkah starts opposite him in the base defense with Harrison and Hootie as safeties.

In nickel I think Fitz will play star, and Tony Brown will be the #2 corner.

With the way Saban raves about Fitzpatrick's instincts, I don't think we'll just play him as a corner on an island. I think he'll be playing corner, star, and maybe even some safety again.

Alabama's Adoree' Jackson? Tide cornerback a special athlete, poised for big year | AL.com
quote:

Anthony Averett began to tighten up halfway through the 40-yard sprint, slowing down as he finished the run instead of pushing like he normally would. Still, Averett ran a 4.45 40. It was further proof of the New Jersey native's speed.

There aren't many players that can run a 4.45 40 healthy. Alabama's redshirt cornerback posted that time while dealing with pain from a mild sports hernia that's bothered him since the second game of last season. It ranked as the sixth-best time on the team during the Crimson Tide's spring testing.

"The trainers or coaches that were there with him, he said they were even saying to him, 'How did you run that time with your injury? That's crazy,'" Averett's mother, Carmen Davis, said.

Averett played through that injury last year, emerging as one of the top cornerbacks in the SEC despite regular pain in his abdomen and groin. It's why Averett should be even better this season.

Averett will undergo a minor procedure in late April after Alabama finishes spring practice and is expected to be back to 100 percent long before the Tide begins fall camp in August.

"He feels like the sky is the limit this year because he was able to do what he did last year even with this restricting him from reaching his full potential and from his full ability with his speed," Davis said. "He's ready to rock and roll. And he just feels like he'll be able to stick receivers and do what he needs to do even better than he did last year."

Alabama has a lot of fast players. The 6-foot, 185-pound Averett is arguably the fastest when healthy. Averett posted the fastest 40 time on the team during the spring of 2015, a 4.30. He then ran a 4.34 last year, tied for the fastest time on the team.

A former member of the Tide's track & field team, Averett was a New Jersey state champion in several events, including the long jump and 100-meter dash.

As a high school junior, Averett recorded the top long jump in the nation among high school athletes (25 feet, two inches). The speed and athleticism carry over to football.

In his first year as a contributor on defense, Averett started every game last season, made 38 tackles and had a team-high eight pass breakups. CBS Sports ranks Averett as the third-best NFL prospect among rising senior cornerbacks.

Former Alabama wide receiver ArDarius Stewart compared Averett to another ex-track standout, someone who won the Jim Thorpe Award at USC last year and is now considered one of the top cornerbacks in this year's NFL draft.

"He's an Adoree' Jackson type," Stewart said of Averett. "... He has a lot of speed. He's very talented and he's very smart, and he's not afraid to come up and make tackles."

The recent 40 run was one of the latest reminders of Averett's speed and athleticism, impressive enough that fellow defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick brought it up while discussing Averett last week. "Hurt, he actually ran a (4.4) 40," Fitzpatrick said. "He's a great athlete and a great competitor."

Alabama practice report: Injured LB participates as 2 Heisman winners watch | AL.com
quote:

It was a hot one out there for Alabama's fourth spring practice of the year. Temperatures were right around 80 before humidity on a sunny Tuesday afternoon.

A few notes about what we saw:

-- Shaun Dion Hamilton was spotted with the middle linebackers in a black jersey. It's the first time we've seen him doing anything but rehabbing the ACL he tore in December during the SEC Championship. He remains limited and wouldn't figure to be part of any contact drills until August.

-- Derrick Henry was watching some of the drills from the sideline. Also in attendance was Pat Sullivan, the 1971 Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn who went on to coach at a few schools including Samford.

-- Taking a look at the secondary, Tony Brown was at Star. Minkah Fitzpatrick and Anthony Averett remain the two cornerbacks.

-- The first two receivers in lines were Robert Foster and Calvin Ridley.

-- Watching early enrollee linebacker Dylan Moses for a bit, it's clear he's not like most incoming players. He's built like someone who's been in the program and he had impressive speed in fumble recovery drills.

I was one of the guys that said Moses was overrated, and he still might be, but I'll be damned if he doesn't look like a monster out there.

And I wish Saban had used him accordingly. Adam had a pretty decent year last year.

I think he vindicated himself at linebacker last season and in the all Star games. He was the best linebacker in the country and at under armour, played physical, fast, and instinctive. Let's hope he keeps that up

I'll take a stab at it and say at least 9:
Harris, Jeudy, Ruggs, Leatherwood, Baker, Buggs, Ray, Bulovas, Fletcher

Why 2 new staff members will be assets for Alabama, Brian Daboll | AL.com
quote:

Nick Saban discussed the two new additions to Alabama's staff for the first time Tuesday night.

The two new additions: Offensive analysts Chris Weinke and Dan Werner.

Weinke, the former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, spent the last two seasons as the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks coach. Werner was co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ole Miss the last five years, helping the Rebels beat the Crimson Tide two of the last three seasons.

"I think those two guys, having coached in high school and college, certainly helps a guy that's coached in the NFL (new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll) be able to balance some of the things that will help us have a well-rounded, pro-style offense that has the college elements that helps you take advantage of some of the college rules," Saban said.

Prior to joining the Rams, Weinke was the head coach at IMG Academy in Florida from 2010 to 2014, coaching high-profile players such as current Alabama standout running back Bo Scarbrough.

Weinke played seven years in the NFL.

"We've always had a lot of respect for Chris Weinke," Saban said. "The guy was a great player. He played a long time in the league. He's very knowledgeable. He's very smart. He was a great high school coach at IMG. He went to the NFL and got a couple good years of experience in the NFL. So we thought he'd bring some knowledge and experience and certainty be helpful to us off the field and helping us with game plan."

Like Weinke, Werner has an impressive resume.

Werner was the quarterbacks coach for Miami's 2001 national championship team, helped former Hurricanes quarterback Ken Dorsey twice finish as a Heisman Trophy finalist and was Miami's offensive coordinator in 2004 and 2005.

Under Werner, Ole Miss scored 43 points against Alabama each of the last two years.

"Dan Werner and Ole Miss, do I need to tell our fans or anybody on our staff the issues that we've had with their offense that last couple of years?" Saban said. "I've always had a tremendous amount of respect for what they do, how they coach it. I think it'll help us on offense and defense to have a guy around here that can add some knowledge and experience to the way they do RPOs, some of the things they did in the passing game. So I've always had a lot of respect for Dan and we're glad to have them here to help."

Nick Saban's plan for Bo Scarbrough's return from broken foot | AL.com
quote:

The last image of Bo Scarbrough's breakout sophomore season was limping off the national title game field. His leg was broken.

Now, almost three months later, Alabama's rising running back star is participating in some spring practice drills. The buzz about his condition entering March was a top storyline considering the monster games he had against Washington and Clemson.

Nick Saban had an update on his status after Tuesday's workout.

"Bo is doing more and more every day," Saban said after the fourth practice of spring. "He did quite a bit today in practice, non-contact stuff, but he's sort of gaining confidence. Our goal for Bo is by the end of spring, he's fully confident that he can do everything he needs to do. Whether he ever scrimmages is really not something that we're not that concerned about."

Scarbrough was the third-leading rusher last season with 812 yards on 125 attempts.

The top returner was also dealing with an injury Tuesday. Saban said Damien Harris sprained his foot Saturday practicing indoors, but expected he'd be back for Thursday's workout.

Saban also said they had been working freshman Chadarius Townsend at slot receiver the last two practices. The early enrollee from Tanner, Alabama was listed as an athlete by most recruiting services.

Depth isn't an issue at running back this season. Even Saban, who isn't big on creating expectations, couldn't downplay that reality.

"We do have a lot of good running backs," Saban said. "We went from not having very many to having a whole bunch. I think they've all done really, really well."

About the other two true freshmen -- Najee Harris and Brian Robinson -- were both "done a nice job," Saban said. He also noted sophomore Josh Jacobs has done a nice job to this point.

Some of the local radio guys were saying today that right now Brian Robinson looks more comfortable than Najee. Hillcrest used Robinson in a ton of roles, so maybe he's used to a more complex offense.
