I ran into a certain guy who was a former NFL head coach, NFL defensive coordinator and now position coach with an NFL team (has a condo close to me and I've known him for several years). He said he was at pro day in Tuscaloosa and had some interesting comments. First, he said that Da'ron Payne was the best football player out there. He told me that Tim Williams was the best draftable player we had, but his club wouldn't look at him because of his drug history. He was very high on Reuben Foster, but said that although he has a good football IQ, he seemed to be a "loose cannon"...also said he'd be drafted highly because he is so good...almost raved about him, saying that he reminded him of a young Ray Lewis. He also said Anderson was impressive and the only negative he mentioned was his short arms. The only offensive player he mentioned was Hurts and he wasn't impressed with his passing ability (who the hell is!!). Finally, I asked about Daboll and he said he'll be fine. "He'll do what Nick wants him to do" were his exact words, and he said we'll see something like what New England runs next year(as expected). Lastly, he wasn't a fan of Lane Kiffin and he said that Daboll would put a solid offensive scheme on the field...not all that "Mickey Mouse shite" that Kiffin was running.

All the player evaluation stuff is great content, but I'm going to take the last bit with a grain of salt.
NFL guys always take this holier than though attitude towards the college game. If we run what New England runs, we better hope Mac Jones is legit because I think Hurts and Tua would struggle mightily in that system.

Well to be fair Reuben hasn't killed anyone. Yet.

Are you saying this bc JH2 doesn't throw the ball like Tom Brady?? I believe the jury is still out on how good (or bad) of a passer JH2 can be for us... assuming you are referring to throwing ability, why do you think Tua would struggle? I thought by all accounts he delivers seeds!
For the record, I do not think Tua will win the QB job anytime soon, I'm just curious if I don't know something about our backup.

New England's offense involves a ton of checks at the line of scrimmage, a lot of it's under center, and a ton of timing routes. It's going to be a hard transition for two short, dual threat QBs regardless of how well they throw the ball.

Hurts and Mac are the same height. Tua is one inch shorter.

Meh, 'dual threat' doesn't automatically mean that they are incapable of making checks, going under center, and hitting timing routes.

LF7 would say hi, if he could.

He was scared of Foster the rest of his career.

Coach, so he didn't say anything about our DL about to be drafted?

Hurts isn't 6'2". I don't know if Mac is listed too tall also, but Hurts doesn't look 6'2" when I walk past him

Any news on Nigel Knott, any chance at significant playing time this year?

I really wish someone would ask Saban about Knott. He is a special athlete

(it's because he isn't white that he thinks that.)

Does anyone here actually think that the best offense for our quarterbacks is the Patriots offense? I can see us implementing some of their concepts. I expect a lot more mid range passing, but we're going to stay in the spread. Anything else would be trying to put a square peg in a round hole particularly with Jalen.

In regards to Tua specifically, I think he'd struggle in that offense because of his height. Most NFL teams with great short quarterbacks, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, either move the launch point or have much more down the field passing than the Patriots. It'd be hard for Tua to even see the receiver on a lot of the routes the Pats run.
Also, we'd be wasting our receivers' outside skills in favor of having them get killed in the middle of the field.

I think I posted it when we hired Daboll, but find the game that Jacoby Brissett started when they had a week to implement a gameplan for him.
My best guess is we see a LOT of that. It was simpler (obviously) and more QB run/move pocket oriented while leaning on the power run game. However, their QB runs were a lot of power runs, counter runs and QB rollouts. There wasn't a lot of RPO stuff, it was more of using the QB almost as an extra RB. Like what Florida did a lot with Tebow.
