I was looking at who all entered the portal from UCLA and Michigan since early December. Very, very few, especially UCLA. I’m surprised, yet we absolutely hemorrhaged guys.

My theory is UCLA had very few guys that would garner much attention and Michigan promoting Sherrone Moore helped convince most of their guys to stick around.

Still, kind of weird there were so few.

They paid their players with NIL, Bama dropped the ball.

The timing wasn't great for classes and losing chip Kelly and even Harbaugh is not in the same realm as losing Saban.

Bama from about 2008-2016 was a machine that sold itself on its toughness and ability to bully the rest of college football. It was the message though. It was the collective. The program. As time went on and college football became more of an open business, Nick had to shift the “pitch” along with the philosophy of his program. I think this had an unexpected effect where Nick Saban became solely what the players were committing to and nothing else. Zero. Not education or anything. Just nick. He was like a 3rd parent.

Harbaugh left Jan 24th. Chip Kelly left Feb 12th.

Both were likely too late for players to make transfers without complicating transfers due to classes already having started and passed their drop/add deadline. Mich was Jan 23rd, UCLA was Jan 19th.

Mich lost a lot to NFL/graduation, and promoted from within

UCLA has less talent relative to Bama, and Chip Kelly leaving UCLA is not even remotely the same as Nick Saban leaving Alabama

That’s not exactly true about the dates and enrolling at new schools. Keon Sabb and Josh Cuevas didn’t enroll until February at UA. Pretty sure either the UA president or chancellor can grant waivers to the enrollment deadline, hence the February enrollment.

Spring II classes don't start until March 4th.

Pretty much it from the start. Once you get into the top twenty or so programs that have the resources, it’s all about the HC.

OP said he was surprised there were less than at Bama

I didn’t say it made transferring impossible. Just complicated.

At the end of the day, like others have said, the main factor is going from Saban to anyone is going to be perceived as a step back compared to the other two coaches and their respective programs

That and they didn't have other coaches from power 5 schools constantly hounding them via calls and texts throughout the year. Other schools were actively recruiting our roster during the damn season

Michigan, specifically was very senior heavy. Those that weren't seniors and have a lot of talent are moving on to the draft. Really there wasn't a big pool of players. That and it's Michigan, very well funded and not exactly a horrible place to play ball.

UCLA is a little more surprising. That said, it's not a very talent heavy team. Add to it, there are worse places to spend your college career than in Bel Air and Pasadena.
