Following a legend is hard. Following a legend at Alabama is even harder. Coaches will not line up to take the job no matter what money is offered. Alabama has a bad track record in this department, and it is well known. Alabama would be very lucky to land Dabo to succeed Saban.

I think some of you guys over value Dabo playing at Bama.

I'm not overvaluing him playin' at Bama...while I think that gives him an edge as far as knowing what he'd be getting into, that's not the primary reason I'd want him. No one is gonna come in here and be like Saban...Saban's one of a kind and I think if someone tries to mimic his exact style, they'll more than likely fail. Especially for Saban's initial successor, I think it'll take someone who knows how to win, but someone whose style is a direct contrast to Saban...Dabo not only fits that style but he's also done a great job at Clemson and is a proven winner...

While Bama is a top job, not sure how many folks will be beatin' down the door for the job. If I was a good coach, I sure wouldn't want to follow Saban as the expectations will be out of this world...I'd rather be the guy that replaces the guy that replaced Saban...

When Bear retired, it wasn't like other top coaches were beggin' to come here. And in the years between the Bear and Saban, the only top tier coach I can recall wanting the job was Bobby Bowden (we ended up hiring Curry)...while Stallings did a great job and I loved what he accomplished, he had an overall losing record as a head coach before he came here. And coaches who were not quite top tier spurned us: Coach Fran left us for "a better job" at Texas A&M after only 2 years and RichRod turned us down to return to West Virginia...

We caught lightning in a bottle when everything aligned and allowed Bama to hire Saban...and I don't see that happening twice in a row. I think we'll be very fortunate if a coach of Swinney's stature/resume follows after Saban...and I think the only reason he might consider it is that he played here...

After Saban... I will have negative expectations. I am fully expected to return to the football world that 99% of other fan bases are in, and the one we were in post Bear / pre - the year of lord Saban... lol

I mean, I'd love to believe we could land a great hire to ease into this reality step at a time.. but, I am specifically willing to deal with ANYTHING that happens. I am gonna allow the bounty we've had sustain my arse for a long, long time.

Dabo? Sure. Would he be my first pick? Nope. But, nothing will compare to what we have. So, I suggest that whenever it happens that we all smile and pat our bellies... and be glad we got to experience a ride few sports fans EVER get to.

I will third this.
Loving Alabama and having attended FSU, I'm spoiled/blessed to have gotten to watch Bear, Bobby and Nick coach and win NatChamps in my lifetime. I've watched Dabo from afar, not sure I want him as my first choice either b/c of his strange inconsistency with the "Clemspsoning It" losses.

I will say this though, Les followed Nick at LSU and won a NatChamp with Nick's players so maybe I have unrealistic expectations but I do expect we will get someone at least as good if not even better than Les and should win for a few years AN (After Nick). I mean, if Les can do it, surely Dabo can win us a NatChamp. We are Alabama after all.

...its his style and his histrionics that are off putting to me....His "Praise Be To GAWWWWD" after winning a football game is just weird to me although a large part of the gump nation will eat it up..... He is just a very squirrley, odd guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve....but I guess it works and his players love him.

That's pretty much how I feel.

Bama's problems were of their own making. Instead of hiring Stallings initially as was Bryant's wish, we hired Perkins. Instead of hiring Bobby Bowden, we hired Bill Curry. We pissed off Stallings who quit and then we promoted Mike Dubose who was the biggest disaster to ever befall the program and that includes Ears Whitworth. All the other instances you mentioned were a direct result of hiring that fricktard Dubose.

If Bama doesn't repeat the mistakes of the past and just gets the best football mind who can recruit we will keep rolling.

I wouldn't mind it. If I were a coach I'd be hesitant to go to BAMA after Saban. He has spoiled us and I'd expect to go into a no-win situation unless I ran the table.

I was kind of meh on him before the playoffs, but with all the exposure and whatnot he has been getting, it's been brought to light for me that he is a good guy who is good in the face of adversity.

He is a Bama boy who would be a great fit IMO. Of course he won't be Saban, but no one is Saban.

I dread the day when the first post-Saban coach comes along and our fanbase goes full retard with the ridiculous expectations that whoever it may be will never live up to. Ugh.

Also, it seems that Auburn fans already hate Dabo for some reason, so there's that.

I'd go with these 5 first, and make all 5 tell me no before I move on to #6....

1. Tony Dungy
2. Bill Cowher
3. John Harbaugh
4. John Gruden
5. Dabo

No, it is not. ATTITUDE is the end-all-be-all because a 5-star player with a bad attitude is much worse for a program than a 3-star with a great attitude. Yes, talent has been a big part of Alabama's success, but the fact that Bama's staff has recruited quality young men (for the most part) is even more important.

I consider the type of men as part of recruiting, just as Saban does.

Dabo's playing at Bama gives him a huge advantage over someone like say, Mike Price. Mike Price arrived in Tuscaloosa completely clueless about the culture and expectations. Dabo understands Bama.

I'm sure Dabo and his staff do, as well.

Agree to disagree.

I like Dabo. I think there is still a few years before we have to worry about replacing Saban though. I mean what else is he going to do? Coaching is his life essentially. He is not the guy that can sit around and relax day in and day out. By the time he leaves, Im sure there will be alot of names we dont know right now that will be hot commodities or flavor of the moment. Dabo, by that time, may still be hot or he could be kinda meh. Is this year lightning in a bottle or is this something he can compete for every year? One thing for sure, one bad hire will negate everything Saban has done.

Its going to be a double edge sword for the next coach. One hand following a legend with unprecedented standard set but on the other will have the most talented team in the country. If whoever the coach is fails it will be hard to recover from.

One thing to consider is Kirby. He may be at his destination job, but if he is successful I think Nick will want him to follow him. Nick will have alot of say in who follows him IMO unless he just up and leaves. I read somewhere that Kirby doenst have a buy out for the Bama job if its available is that correct?

Essentially, Dabo is hot right now for sure. I really like Dabo. But alot can change by the time Saban leaves barring him bolting for the pros. If saban leaves right now, I would talk to Chip Kelley first, then either Herman or Dabo.

OK, until this morning, I was in the DO NOT WANT camp.

I'm watching Clemson media day and changing my mind.

Dabo sounds like Saban when he talks about the importance of, and process of developing people. And frankly, he's more likeable.

He's obviously recruited well at Clemson and with Bama's support and infrastructure I can't imagine he would do worse here.

I was going to say he sounds like Saban all the time but didn't want to piss anyone off

If there's one thing you need when replacing a legend like Saban, it's passion. The man has it in spades. He has stuff that you can't fake, and shouldn't be scared of the job. There MIGHT be 3 guys I'd offer first...and they sure as hell aren't leaving their NFL teams.
