The average onside kick recovery % is about 8-10%.

I swear it's about 30% against us.

Under Saban we've given up about 5 successful onside kicks.

We gave up an onsides against UGA late in 08, against Tennessee in 09, gave up another one or two I'm forgetting over the last few years, and then gave up one today.

It has to be our scheme, it's awful. Even the ones we actually recover aren't clean and are close. They either go out of bounds or bounce around crazy for awhile. It's maddening as shite.

The lucky thing is none of these onside kick recoveries have cost us the game yet, but some of them easily could have. We really need to work on it more.

It doesn't come up much, but when it does the game is usually on the line.

That was a wicked bounce. I really don't know if it could have been prevented. Thought it was interesting they didn't press their luck and try 2 in a row.

It wasn't a wicked bounce. It's exactly the bounce a good kick will produce. I don't mind the scheme because those guys created a great wall for Ridley with nobody near him, but Ridley ran up toward the ball. If he stays back he catches it without a problem. He's got to stay back and wait for the big bounce, which is always going to come on that kind of kick.

However, I would be lying if I said I remembered if the scheme has been the same over Saban's tenure. Hopefully we can figure it out, because we do seem to lose at least one of these every season.

It could have been played better but it was a perfect onside kick. That is exactly how you want it to go.

I'm used to those things happening though when teams play us.. They play their best game and we will always have to overcome that. It's just part of what we have become.

Putting 10 guys up to block and 1 guy to catch it is the issue, at least it was with the kick yesterday. It creates this situation where if that one guy misses it you are completely screwed.

Better to have 2-3 guys back to catch it and less blockers IMO.

We also need to tell the blockers they are allowed to run up field after the kick.

It's better to engage the guys further away from the ball, no need to sit back.

I think it might be a good idea to try and have two guys behind that wall to catch the ball. Problem is we don't actually have 10 guys blocking. It's more like six. We have to leave some guys on the other side of the field to account for them kicking it that way (the kicking team can only have a maximum of six players on either side of the kicker).

the ball was going slow enough and smooth enough for harrison to catch it or fall on it...he moved out of the way. poorly planned and executed all around...

Ridley backed up on it like a shortstop making the mistake of backing up on sinking line drive. Once you do that, the ball plays you, and generally the ball wins.

I was referring to harrison in the front line...he couldve fallen on that ball just as easily as Ridley couldve played it off the bounce...my guess is that those front line guys are instructed not to do so based on the way Harrison moved out of the way.
