tOSU's punter was named though, and he has the same number of punts as Scott does(36).

I believe upon closer inspection that his net average(the tOSU punter is 2nd in the nation, Scott is 12th) and punts inside the 20 are held against him(he's very low with 13).

He averages 50 yards a punt, he was robbed of the award his freshman year. Had they given out the award after the Sugar Bowl in 14, he would have won it.

And that is spectacular, but for an award like the Ray Guy, I don't think it's too surprising that they dig deep on the statistics.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — After taking Monday off, Alabama returned to the practice field on Tuesday to begin preparing for Chattanooga.

The Crimson Tide (10-0, 7-0 SEC) hosts Chattanooga on Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

What we saw

-Running back Bo Scarbrough (knee) showed no signs of being limited. Scarbrough participated in both individual and group drills during the viewing period of practice. Scarbrough is still wearing a brace on his right knee. He missed the Mississippi State game, but Alabama coach Nick Saban said that was because the team didn’t want to rush him back.

-Linebacker Reuben Foster is still wearing the protective club on his left hand. Foster said after the Mississippi State game that he had a “chipped” bone in his hand, but that it shouldn’t affect his play on the field. Foster went through drills with the team.

-Senior Korren Kirven continued to work at right guard with the first-team offensive line. Kirven made his first career start at right guard on Saturday vs. Mississippi State. He and Josh Casher rotated at the position throughout the game.

-The rest of the first-team offensive line had Cam Robinson at left tackle, Ross Pierschbacher at left guard, Bradley Bozeman at center and Jonah Williams at right tackle.

-Lester Cotton, who had been starting at right guard, worked at right tackle with the second-team offensive line. Cotton played mostly on the field goal unit and as a backup vs. Mississippi State.

-Along with Cotton, the rest of the second-team offensive line had Casher at right guard, J.C. Hassenauer at center, Dallas Warmack at left guard and Matt Womack at left tackle.

-Scouts from the New Orleans Saints and the New York Giants watched practice.

2. Ryan Anderson is coming of age

Ryan Anderson was a two-star prospect at the beginning of his high school career. That's where we ranked him. Then he just kept getting better. Every time I saw him in high school, he was more impressive. Then he had a dominating senior season and a dominant performance at the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic and eventually he earned his way all the way up to a five-star ranking.

To me, he was , the dominating pass-rushing threat for Alabama of that previous season. With the five-star ranking for Anderson, I was basically saying I thought he could be a first round draft pick. When Upshaw didn't get drafted in the first round, I had some doubts about the ranking.

Anderson redshirted his first year at Alabama. The only feedback I heard on him from his first year was "short arms." But just like in high school, Anderson has gotten better every year. Significant incremental steps have taken us to what Anderson is today: a guy leading the nation's best defense and best team in tackles for loss.

He may not have the first step of Tim Williams, the size of Jonathan Allen or the hit stick of Reuben Foster but Anderson is every bit the football player of all of those guys. His physicality has translated to the college game and it will do so in the NFL as well. Suddenly there's a chance he may sneak into the first round and make that five-star rating right after all.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama junior left tackle Cam Robinson was selected as one of five semifinalists for the Outland Trophy on Wednesday night.

The Outland Trophy is awarded annually to the nation’s top interior lineman.

Robinson, who has started every game at left tackle since stepping foot on campus three years ago, anchors the Crimson Tide offensive line. His play has helped the Alabama offense rank 14th nationally and first in the Southeastern Conference in scoring offense at 41.2 points per game.

The Monroe, La., native has blocked for 10 100-yard rushing games this season and 27 100-yard rushers during his three year career. This season, he has recorded 21 knockdown blocks in 10 games while protecting Alabama quarterbacks from some of the top edge pass rushers in the nation.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama coach Nick Saban spoke to reporters after practice on Wednesday.

The Crimson Tide (10-0, 7-0 SEC) hosts Chattanooga (8-2) on Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Highlights from Saban’s time at the podium:

-As I said earlier in the week, the focus needs to be on improving and trying to do everything well. You need to focus on what’s going to help you today, not what’s going to happen in the future.

-We’ve talked about playing to a standard. You have to execute to a standard and prepare to a standard.

-After games, I shake hands with the players on the other team. After that, I go in to a press conference with my favorite family of people. Then I shake hands with all the recruits. After all of that type of stuff is done, I head home and I’m lucky to get something to eat. I hate to see what would happen if we lost.

-I think Jalen Hurts operating under center is important to him and the team. He’s improved in that area and hopefully we can continue to build on that.

-Lester Cotton has been a tackle for us for a long time. We tried to work him at guard. The development hasn’t happened as fast as we’d like. In order to get the five best players on the field, we’re working some guys at different positions. We’re still working Lester at both tackle and guard.

-In my opinion, JK Scott is the best punter in the country in terms of what he does for our team. I’m not going to criticize anyone for what their opinion is. (Scott was left off the semifinalist list for the Ray Guy Award).

Alabama was back on the field Wednesday for its second -- and final open -- day of on-field preparation for the Chattanooga Mocs. The Crimson Tide players practiced outdoors and in full pads on a sunny, 73-degree afternoon.

Here are several observations from the media viewing portion of Alabama’s Wednesday practice in Tuscaloosa:

- The situation at right guard remained the same with Korren Kirven receiving all of the first-team reps Wednesday, while Joshua Casher was with the second team and Lester Cotton was at right tackle with the second-team offensive line.

“I think right guard has been -- losing Alphonse Taylor and playing several different guys at that position -- is still sort of a work in progress,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said Wednesday on the SEC coaches teleconference.

- Running back Bo Scarbrough (knee) saw reps behind Damien Harris and Josh Jacobs during team run drills and appeared to be moving fine with help from a brace on his right knee. On Monday, Saban said Scarbrough needs to “develop confidence in what he needs to do.”

- A handful of offensive players sported scout-team jerseys, representing Chattanooga standouts. They were:

Ronnie Clark -- RB Derrick Craine (5-10, 205)

Xavian Marks -- RB Richardre Bagley (5-9, 180)

Truett Harris -- TE Malcolm Colvin (6-2, 240)

Cam Stewart -- TE Bailey Lenoir (6-4, 245)

- Former defensive back Jabriel Washington was spotted at the facility before the two media viewing periods.

- NFL scouts from the New York Giants and Chicago Bears watched Wednesday’s practice from the sideline.

TUSCALOOSA -- When talking to his teammates, many don’t hesitate to name Da'Ron Payne the strongest player on Alabama’s roster.

In the weight room it’s obvious. And he doesn’t hold back from showing it on the football field, either. Just turn on the tape of the LSU game. Payne obliterated right guard Josh Boutte, putting on his back while applying pressure on quarterback Danny Etling.

But that is no surprise to his teammates.

“Oh my gosh, he’s an athletic specimen,” tight end Hale Hentges said. “As you guys have seen, he’s probably the strongest dude on our team, if not, one of the strongest. His quick twitch, his explosion, his power is something that I’ve never seen out of a D-lineman, especially for how young he is. I think he’s younger than me.

“For him to be that strong and that fast and just a complete player at just being a sophomore is just incredible. He’s a great leader on our defense too, which is something a lot of people don’t talk about, but he’s a great leader.”

The sophomore has recorded 23 tackles from his defensive tackle position, including 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. In seeing more snaps, Payne has made more highlight reel plays and displays of his strength (see also the Tennessee game) in his second season compared to his first. Why is that?

“I try to improve as every day goes on, and learn from the older guys like Jon Allen and Dalvin Tomlinson,” Payne said earlier this week. “Keep my head in the playbook and watch a lot of film. I think I'm getting better.”

SABAN SEEING PROGRESS FROM HURTS

The passing game was an area of emphasis for Alabama in its 51-3 win over Mississippi State on Saturday, and true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts showed signs of progress with his downfield passing in his 347-yard, four-touchdown outing.

Getting Hurts to stretch the field and accurately distribute the ball to the Tide’s plethora of playmakers has been something Nick Saban has harped on of late. But to be clear, he never said he was limiting how much of the field Hurts could read.

“I said the guy has to know whether it’s the middle of the field or split the safeties and which half of the field that he works on versus what he reads in the coverage,” Saban said. “That’s how most passing games are built. It’s not what we allow him to do or don’t allow him to do. We’re trying to get him to do that very effectively. He is getting better and better and better at it. I think it was a good indication, the way he played in the last game, the progress that he’s made.

“We have to trust in the quarterback, that we can get the ball to our skill guys and he’s going to get it to them effectively in the right places and the right time so that we can make explosive plays down the field. So I think we’re making progress in that area, but we’re continuing to work on it every day.”

In his ninth start of the season, Hurts also received a few snaps from under center from Bradley Bozeman. That’s been a rarity for the dual-threat quarterback, who has obviously been more comfortable working out of the shotgun. But that’s also a sign of his progress.

“I think it’s important to him. I think it’s important to the offense. I think it’s important to our team,” Saban said. “When you say it’s important to me, I think I’m just a part of the team here. Jalen has progressed very nicely and I thought he played his best and most complete game in the last game against Mississippi State. Hopefully we can build on that.”

‘GREAT TO BE IN DRIVER’S SEAT’

The third College Football Playoff rankings were unveiled Tuesday night after a chaotic week of college football. Nos. 2, 3 and 4 all lost but did not drop out of the top six, while Alabama (10-0, 7-0 SEC) remained in the No. 1 spot. Being able to control their own destiny as the lone, undefeated Power 5 team is something the players are aware of.

“We are lucky enough to stay in that same spot all year, and we just gotta keep playing like we have been. Hopefully we stay there,” Hentges said. “... You don’t want to put your own fate into the hands of a committee. If you can stay undefeated, obviously that’s what you want to do, because if you are 10-0 and you win the SEC and you win all of your games, then no one can deny you that No. 1 spot.

“That’s a great feeling just to know you are in your own driver’s seat and you don’t have to leave it up to some people on a committee. Obviously, you want to control your own destiny in college football.”

WISE WORDS FROM COACH PRUITT

All of the Crimson Tide coaches have helped junior linebacker Rashaan Evans develop over the course of his career, but first-year defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt has already had a lasting impression on him. He provides Evans with life concepts that he uses every day.

“The No. 1 thing I would say is the game of football is a game and we all love the game, but there are bigger things other than football with family and friends and all those things,” Evans said. “He’s always telling us to kind of enjoy those things and also enjoy the time that you do have around the guys that are here, because, to be honest with you, we are embarking on history right now so it’s always good for you to slow down and live in the moment.”

Seems Cotton will not be getting the RG spot back, Saban said they believe they made the wrong assumption that his potential at Tackle would be the same at Guard.

Basically said he was forced to play hurt and shouldn't have waited to have shoulder surgery after his senior season.
