Not dog in this fight, but I recall AJ being just fine in mop up. Even had that great Julio catch against San Jose State.

He looked in over his head when he had to come in and try and win the game vs Auburn that season. A lot of guys would, but he looked like a guy who wasn't ready to take the reigns. Those are really the only meaningful snaps he took, a lot like Bateman last year.

As best I can figure it given today's news, is that when Saban mentioned after the last scrimmage that it seemed one guy seemed like he'd taken the job, only to falter and drop back. It seems to me that must have been directly about Barnett. Because for him to still be in the convo after his last scrimmage tells me that he must have been lighting shite on fire at times. He must be super up or super down.

Bateman, I'm guessing is Mr. Consistency, but limited with his arm. And Hurts is simply sitting cause he's a freshman, and likely behind in the playbook department - he's only been on campus for 8 months.

Personally, I'd rather have Bateman over Barnett, and for only one reason - limiting turnovers.

I think Saban is hoping that either Bateman or Barnett can be serviceable and allow Hurts to develop more and take over next year. That's the only reason I can see for having either of them in the conversation just based on what we have all seen from A-Day and read in the practice reports.

Did people actually think Saban would start a true freshman QB in game one?

If he thought that player gave him the best chance to win, absolutely. I have no doubt about it at all.

Anyone who thinks Saban sits there and says "this guy is our best chance to win, but we're not playing him just because the other guy was here first" really needs to seek professional help.

He was put in quite possibly the worst situation that a backup could be put in in the 2010 IB, and he had two drops, one dropped INT, and an arid pass. Definitely didn't look awful.

No, he didn't look awful. He looked rushed, though. Like you said, it was a hard as balls situation to be thrown into.

If Hurts is sitting simply because he is a freshman when he has been the best option reported by literally everyone who has been to scrimmage and practice?

I wouldn't even be surprised if he transfers. In the back of his mind he may think even when Bateman goes Barnett will always be ahead of him.

How about we just let them get through the first 2 games before we lose our minds one way or another?

The current braintrust just won back-to-back SEC Championships and a National Championship with Blake Sims and Jacob Coker. How about we give them some room to work.

Bozeman's move to center concerns me. Was Ross not playing well there? This seems like a very late move.

They practice those guys all over the place all the time, and Bozeman has actually started games at center (and of course Ross P has started at guard).

Doesn't seem like a big deal, more like after weeks of tinkering and trying things they determined this was the best group of 5.

Saban's comments in the presser were very telling. He obviously doesn't think Hurts is familiar enough with the offense/reading the D, to take over yet. Things like knowing where everybody should be are still a concern.
His comments about wanting to take advantage of the WR's on the team makes me think that Barnett will be the man. We'll see. I guess Coop will start and Blake will come in at some point, but I don't think it was ever discussed which of the two would be in first.

AJ McCarron DID NOT look as bad as Bateman during his mop up duties lol. Stop it now, that's ridiculous.

Jalen Hurts is trending now on Twitter

This place is going to be fun when we throw our first INT. Doesn't matter which QB throws it

Wasn't just against Auburn.

GMac got knocked out in a series deep in SC territory. AJ game in and Bama turned it over on downs. He played in two of the three games Bama lost that year and didn't complete a single pass in 5 attempts.

Of course, he got just a tad better the next year.

Bateman may fall flat on his face, but to guarantee that it will happen based on last year is pretty danged stupid.

Barnett's apparently turnover issues due scare me, especially in games like USC where we should be able to control their offense, but giving them short fields could change the game.

However, it sounds like Barnett has been really good in practice and was alright in the 1st scrimmage. He just had a terrible 2nd scrimmage. Maybe they evaluated everything and decided that was an outlier.

Hurts isn't sitting because he's called a freshman. He's sitting because it's impossible for a freshman to come in and learn everything that needs to be learned in order for the team to function at full capacity. Teams that start freshmen QB's don't have older, highly recruited guys ahead of them. Bama doesn't have to take those lumps.

And, I'd stop buying into everything we hear out of closed practices.

Hurts WILL be the starter at Bama some day. Maybe even later this year. It sounded like Saban wants to continue to work with him. But, I'm betting that in Nick Saban's perfect world, Barnett takes the reigns and runs with it this year. That's what he was hinting at when he talked about all the WR's we have and the need to get them the ball. And, that's what he was hinting at when he mentioned Rohan Davie sucking in practice but being great in games. He's hoping Barnett is like that.

Yea, I think Hurts even playing this year says a ton about his talent.

Kids a failure. If he cant beat out Bateman then there is no way he will beat out Tua. Hurts was so summer 2016, its the fall now and all aboard the #TuaTrain!
