Alabama was back on the practice field Thursday afternoon for its 22nd practice of the fall. The Crimson Tide players practiced indoors and in full pads on a sunny, 95-degree afternoon.

Here are several tidbits from the media viewing portion of Alabama's Thursday practice session in Tuscaloosa:

- The quarterback line remained unchanged during the media viewing periods of Wednesday’s practice. Cooper Bateman led Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts in individual drills, while Bateman and David Cornwell (foot) led the two quarterback lines that threw to the Tide running backs and receivers, with Barnett and Hurts lined up behind them, respectively.

- Wide receiver Cam Sims (knee) still appeared to be limited, although the junior ran a couple routes. He was not moving at full speed, and it showed on the best ball of the viewing periods (from Hurts) that sailed over his head.

- Linebacker Keith Holcombe (ankle) was doing more Thursday after a couple days of limited practices.

- Spotted a couple of what looked like scout-team numbers during the two media viewing periods. Wide receiver Xavian Marks wore No. 7 for USC slot receiver Steven Mitchell Jr. Walk-on running back Avery Reid wore No. 25 for USC tailback Ronald Jones II. And walk-on tight end Cam Stewart wore No. 82 for USC tight end Tyler Petite. A couple of walk-on receivers also wore No. 1 for USC wideout Darreus Rogers.

- Grad transfer wide receiver Gehrig Dieter changed numbers, too, from No. 14 to No. 11. The former Bowling Green wideout made an impressive one-handed catch along the sideline during quarterback-receiver drills.

- What appeared to be the first-team nickel defense was Marlon Humphrey and Anthony Averett at corner, Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison at safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick at Star and Reuben Foster and Shaun Hamilton at linebacker.

- NFL scouts from the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots and Denver Broncos watched today’s practice.

- Former Alabama track and field standout Kirani James was also at the athletic facility on Thursday. James is back on U.S. soil after capturing a silver medal in the 400 meters at the Rio Olympic Games.

*** What’s next: Alabama head coach Nick Saban will hold a post-practice press conference at 6 p.m. CT.

Hopefully Holcombe can be fully healthy this season and not come up with anymore unfortunate circumstances.

I need prevatt and those other posters who were defending Bateman to read this.

Firstly, what journalists see is the "warm-up" period for QB's. I don't care how they look while getting loose. I care how they look when we go live.

Secondly, my over-arching point regarding the QB position is that a lot of what goes into being a successful QB is not what you do with your arm, but what you do with your head and your voice. And Bateman may give us a better chance to win than many think because of his playbook knowledge/leadership and his wisdom to not force it. I'm only trying to bring logic into the discussion. However, I've said many times, play the best - whoever that is.

And he may launch stupid INTs to safeties

Bateman has no demonstrable history of doing that.

Honestly, I'm sick and tired of discussing the QB position. Each QB has pros and cons. It seems to have boiled down to Bateman and Hurts. There's nothing new to be said. It will shake out when the lights come on in Jerryworld. I'll support 100% whoever is taking the snap. Roll Tide.

Stronger arm than Bateman or Barnett. Might be slightly less than Cornwallis but not by much. Deep throws he can chuck it.

fricking fap city. I was a little concerned about his deep ball because he just isn't very big. My hype level is now through the roof.

I'm not reading into anything with the way QB's line up in practice, especially during viewing. I remember when he put AJ in the back to see how he'd respond. Gotta see how kids handle adversity. I'm so ready for next Saturday and some football.. and ready to cheer the hell for whoever trots out on the field to kick USC's arse.

This concerns me as much as anything
quote:

The special teams were not featured much, but the kicking situation is not optimal. Adam Griffith has an injured foot and a possibly injured neck ("Griffith's foot has been bothering him, but we're running his neck.") Walk-on/Ole Miss transfer Andy Pappanastos missed his lone attempt, a 21-yarder.

Not sure what the neck comment is about. Maybe I'm just dumb

That's a pass to a receiver down the sideline that gets picked off at the hash

And immediately after that, Stewart was getting his arse chewed by Kiffin on National TV for running the wrong route. Try again.

Additionally, how many bad picks did Coker have off of his back foot in the first half of last season? 5? 6? And remind me what happened at the end of last season? Oh yeah, we won a championship. Too many Bama fans expect perfection.

I don't know or care what is happening with the QB's. I think we have three guys that would start at a lot of places. I trust the coaches to pick the best one for our team. And expect whoever it is to win a lot of games.

Looks like Davis still hasn't qualified.
