WOW. I think all of those guys are going to be good, but I get the feeling that guy might overreact to things a bit.

I like his style but he is a bit of an over-exaggerator, especially when it comes to younger Bama players. This was his take on Cornwell as a prospect...

quote:

Maybe I am in the minority but after watching Cornwell throw in person I am even more convinced he is the best QB prospect I have seen since Peyton. I really do understand the hype behind [Brandon] Harris but watching them up close showed the glaring differences in their games. Cornwell is a top 5 pick. PERIOD. Harris could be the next Teddy Bridgewater or the next Russell Sheperd. Not saying he wont get there but Harris has some work to do. Cornwell is ready now and if he is an EE WILL push for the job next year.

Now I realize talent hasn't really been a question for DC, but still...

Raekwon Davis is still not fully cleared to play yet.

He just loves the Tide and nothing is better. Trust me I know a bunch of them. I try to be critical as well when I report.

Damnit. Look at that beast:

That's Daron Payne and Dalvin Tomlinson on the right for comparison.

Phil Savage on the QB's:
quote:

“Based on what I saw (yesterday),” Savage said on Inside the Tide, “I get the sense that we’ll see Cooper Bateman and Jalen Hurts in the first couple of games, with Nick Saban and the staff trying to figure out who really gives them the best opportunity long-term by the third game of the year, which is against Ole Miss over in Oxford.”

From another dude on BOL:

quote:

I was listening to a Ryan Fowler podcast this morning and he was talking about how QB reps have been split up the last two practices. He said Cooper Bateman got the majority of first team snaps at Tuesday's practice and yesterday Blake Barnett was given the majority of first team snaps. This leads me to believe Hurts will get that opportunity today and then the USC game planning will begin tomorrow. Sounds like the coaching staff is giving each guy one final practice as the guy leading the first team before narrowing it down to two.

Reading between the lines from everything out there I do believe Bateman will start but Hurts will get the chance and play a lot against USC. The only real unknown right now for Hurts and Barnett as well is how they will do in a real game and handle the pressure. USC will prove if either can handle the job yet.

I think with USC's lack of depth on the defensive line and our talent on the offensive line we will run the ball 75-80% of the time.

Our QBs won't be asked to do a whole lot outside of moving the chains. If we throw a deep ball or two I imagine they will come off of play action.

I think the real test is going to be Ole Miss two weeks later. Just my opinion of course.

Savage also said this about this year's defense:

“This is a defense that is constituted quite a bit differently than the beginning of the Nick Saban era. I went back and did some research, and in 2009, the front seven, so the D-line and linebackers, they were 20 pounds heavier than this group that will start this year. So they’ve really adjusted and adapted their recruiting, they’ve streamlined the athletic look, the athletic build that they’re trying to find in recruiting and then they’ve developed it once these guys have gotten on campus. This will be the fastest defense, from A to Z, that Nick Saban has had. I think they’re equipped and, barring injury, this defense should really play extremely well this year.”

AGREE!
Best case scenario is we get past usc with batmen and hurt playing REALLY well. Then we jump out to a big enough lead in game two against Western Kentucky to let both young kids have a Qt and a 1/2.

Most of the writers and so-called experts believe the DL for USC will be a lot better this year. Yes they will lack in depth and losing Kenny Bigelow for the season does not help but the expectations are high for that group of theirs. Not to mention they got their DC back who in 2013 had a really good D that could shut teams down. I think their base 5-2 he runs will give us problems and we are definitely going to need a QB who can scramble.

His first year as a DC at Cal in 2010 Oregon came in as the #1 team in the country avg 55 points a game. Oregon won the game 15-13. He also runs that 1-5-5 defense with only one DL with his hand down. Trying to keep QBs guessing what to expect.

I just think USC is going to be a lot tougher then some believe but I also believe this may be Saban's best team he has put on the field as well.

But one wonders if the offense would be limited with Bateman behind center.

Hurts and Barnett both have more upside and arm talent than Bateman.

When reporters have been allowed to watch practices, Bateman has been seen throwing balls at the feet of receivers and underthrowing deep routes so much that the receivers don’t have time to adjust.

I need prevatt and those other posters who were defending Bateman to read this.

He had been underwhelming, he hasn't improved his throwing and his arm is noticeably weaker.

The part about bateman and hurts getting reps with the 1's is true. I have not heard that about Barnett. They may give him a series look. But the majority is def leaning CB and JH.

This is what I was saying awhile back. The scrimmage on Sat Bateman threw one underthrown "bad", one 20 yards past ridley, and one at ridley's feet. All in like a 5 min period. IMO don't take this to the bank, Barnett didn't have the best arm strength either. He floats the ball pretty bad.

Not that it matters now, we just need to win and establish a leader behind center sooner rather than later.

On deep throws

Stronger arm than Bateman or Barnett. Might be slightly less than Cornwallis but not by much. Deep throws he can chuck it.
