Not a tough call. Bateman may start because Saban is Saban, but he is underwhelming and predictable. He can't consistently compete the deeper passes which will have tans stack the box and shut or offense down.

Hurts is our guy. Even Saban knows it judging by what he has been reported to say.

BTW, I don't even understand why anyone would want Bateman? Blows my mind.

This is a million percent wrong. You prevent stacking the box by formation OR having any kind of effective passing game. The deep ball only backs the safeties up. Stacking the box means selling out to stop the run. Bateman, or any other QB, could hit the short to intermediate stuff with a high completion percentage and no one will ever "stack the box".

This is completely wrong again. Stacking the box in this instance is the fact they know Bateman struggles to complete passes over 15 yards. They will bring everybody up because they know he is inconsistent and the pressure will make us be more conservative in our play calling.

Again, there are literally no reasons (outside easing one of the youngsters in) for starting Bateman. He greatly limits what we can do. Only grasping of straws for reasons only God knows?

I agree.

This is an example of how things can get progressively blown out of proportion on message boards. We've gone from "Bateman is having trouble on his deep ball" to "he struggles to complete passes over 15 yards". I watched him complete back to back 30+ yarders for TDs at fan day (a video of one was posted in this thread). But message boards are an echo chamber and when posters question his arm strength over and over again we start imagining someone on the level of a Pop Warner QB.

I would make the argument that playing a kid who's only been on campus for 8 months greatly limits what we can do.

An opinion from someone just above a functioning idiot:

If the competition is close, I think you should go with the player with the most upside. With a few games experience, which player will give the team the best chance to win?

As a former player said, "By game 5, you're no longer a freshman." You either know your job by that point or you're riding the pine. We may ease Hurts in, but this is not a long term project. He's the man by Ole Miss or we're fricked. Bateman just doesn't have it. Maybe if Hurts is having one of those shitstorm games like Barnetts scrimmage the other day, we bring Cooper in to settle things down and regroup but he's not the long term answer.

I think all the fans who want Hurts is prompted just as much because of all the hype outside of these message boards by the writers who are singing his praise. I just heard Cecil Hurt say that Jalen is a young D Watson. That is he is where Watson was his first year in college and it will be hard not to put him on the field this year. He seems to think Bateman will start in the first game but implied Hurts will overtake him at some point.

Kinglaw on BOL (Reuben Foster's Uncle) posted last night that Hurts is a bad man. He says the players had already been raving about him for awhile now. The final word has not come down yet, but Kinglaw says he would not be surprised IF Hurts ended up starting at some point.

Cecil Hurt is not one for hyperbole or exaggeration.

And that's completely believable. But those convinced Hurts has "already been named the starter" are kidding themselves.

I still think Bateman starts the USC game and likely the Ole Miss game. Hurts could be the starter by the Tennessee game though.

From Charlie Potter's Twitter

Ryan Anderson on this year's team's potential: "I don't get into potential. I played with a lot of guys in high school that had potential."

I get the feeling Ryan Anderson doesn't take much crap from people
