That turned out to be a rumor. Wasn't true. I asked a coach.

Hey guys I wanted to pass along something about the qb battle from a solid source....

From what he tells me, he's on the coaching staff, Brandon Avalos is actually coming out of retirement and is expected to be our starting QB against USC in just 11 short days.

Don't shoot the messenger....

I believe part of that, but my source said it was Spencer Pennington. I guess we shall see

A few musings: the Chris Leak-Tebow analogy. Some of y'all seem to forget Chris Leak was a 5 star can't miss superstar himself and contemplated going pro and skipping his senior year. My point is, bad analogy. Leak wasn't getting benched for anyone, not even Tebow. Granted, Tim got his snaps but Leak played a lot. We don't have an NFL draft pick in front of Hurts so I don't think the comparison is valid.

I don't give a flying frick who starts against USC. Who takes the most snaps? My vision is that Bateman starts and as long as we're moving the ball and making first downs and getting scoring opportunities, no change will be made. But if we put together a couple of three and outs, especially if Bateman makes some questionable throws or decisions, he'll get the hook. If we're going to sputter, might as well do it with the playmaker.

Who do you trust more to make the play in this scenario: we're down 4 midway through the 4th quarter when Ridley puts a move on the corner and breaks free down the sidelines. The safety bit on the run fake and is hopelessly trying to recover but is 10 yards behind the play. The QB has an easy TD if he can just put the ball out there where Ridley can get under it without having to break stride. QB X is going to throw it out there for Ridley to run under. Maybe he overthrows it, maybe not, but he gets it out there. QB Y is going to throw it out there as well but it may be under thrown and it may hang up there allowing the DBs to recover. Or QB Y may be worried about an underthrow and a pick so he checks down to the middle curl which nets a nice first down but there's still work to do to win the game.

I want the QB that throws it deep not someone playing it safe.

I'll take qb X, unless qb Z is the kind of guy that turns green and breaks the entire opposing defense in half.

Quick update and apologies for not getting it up yesterday.

QB order when media wasn't around was

Bateman
Hurts
Barnett
Corn

So what does this mean? It this pretty much set in stone now that we are under 2 weeks from Game 1?

Ha. There is a moral to this story, but to heck with it.

I wouldn't bet the farm on it, or for that matter, I wouldn't even bet the dog's house on it, but my guess is that it will be Bateman, and Hurts or Barnett (probably Hurts) will play a few series in the games that aren't close.. Perhaps one of them will start before the year is up.

Lot of quick outs, intermediate slants, west coast type offense, along with a strong running game, a package for the other qb when they are ready for it, and great defense. It'll work.

Lane Kiffin took a substitute utility player and set offensive records, won the SEC, and went to the playoffs with him. He can surely make a serviceable qb out of Bateman

That's the order they took reps in, don't worry too much about it. Late this week I will be able to tell you exact rep counts. That is what you want to pay attention too. If Bateman and Hurts get 20 reps a piece they are easily interchangeable.

Basically it could be that, rep count later this week will tell me the tale. It's always right.

We will be testing the waters with both these guys to see who can do it most effectively on game day. USC is a big game but we have a cupcake week 2 before we head to Oxford. Still some time to shake it out. AJ didn't really win the starter until Penn State which was a couple of games in I believe.
