meh. he's gonna have to improve tremendously in order for most to feel that we missed out. I'm sure Saban and staff have someone (or, more likely, multiple people) they are targeting who are ranked higher on their board at the position.

We already supposedly like him a LOT, FWIW.

I have no doubt that they do, but - without any inside knowledge to back it up - I would be willing to bet there are 3-5 players at the position they'd accept a commitment from over him.

PJ Mustipher
Dare Rosenthal
Taron Vincent

those three come to mind pretty quickly. Again, I have no inside knowledge though. Maybe I'm wrong.

I know this is the 2018 MEGATHREAD but Rivals has put out some stuff from last year's class (non-premium) that I thought I would share:

quote:

Sometimes it’s not always the highest-rated prospects that fit the best with the school of their choice. In this series we call Commit Fit, Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell looks at the best fits from the 2017 class to the schools with which they signed.

Today we examine the SEC.

Note: Only high school prospects are evaluated for this piece.

QUARTERBACK

1. Kellen Mond, Texas A&M

2. Jake Fromm, Georgia

3. Keytaon Thompson, Mississippi State

4. Tua Tagovailoa, Alabama

5. Myles Brennan, LSU

Farrell’s take: Mond is perfect for what Texas A&M asks of its quarterback. Fromm will push Jacob Eason quickly and has the skillset to excel in a pro-style offense. Thompson could be Dan Mullen’s next great quarterback. Tagovailoa is a better pure passer than Jalen Hurts and could be the long-term passing solution. Finally, Brennan has the smarts and downfield vision to perhaps help a rough quarterback system at LSU and excel under Matt Canada.

RUNNING BACK

1. Najee Harris, Alabama

2. D’Andre Swift, Georgia

3. Devan Barrett, Auburn

4. Ty Chandler, Tennessee

5. Chase Hayden, Arkansas

Farrell’s take: Big running backs have done well at Alabama, while powerful running backs with good vision and decisiveness obviously excel at Georgia. I like Barrett’s explosiveness and ability to turn the corner for Auburn’s rushing attack. Chandler can work inside and outside for the Vols and his speed can complement what’s already on the roster. Finally, Hayden can be a workhorse in Arkansas' power running sets.

WIDE RECEIVER

1. Jerry Jeudy, Alabama

2. OrTre Smith, South Carolina

3. Jhamon Ausbon, Texas A&M

4. Mark Webb, Georgia

5. Henry Ruggs, Alabama

Farrell’s take: Jeudy’s catch-and-run ability will be perfect as Hurts develops as a passer. South Carolina will utilize Smith’s size and big hands well. Ausbon has size and sneaky speed and could be that big receiver a la Mike Evans (okay slightly smaller) as a go-to guy. Webb’s downfield speed will be needed and utilized by Georgia. Ruggs, out of the slot or outside, can be an extension of the Crimson Tide rushing attack.

TIGHT END

1. Keynel McZeal, Texas A&M

2. Kemore Gamble, Florida

3. Kedrick James, Alabama

4. LaTrell Bumphus, Tennessee

5. Will Register, South Carolina

Farrell’s take: I like McZeal’s athleticism. Gamble will be a key for a quarterback-starved Florida offense as a big, reliable target. James could be a star with his length and ability to flex out. Bumphus is learning the tight end position but his athleticism will make him a target for the Vols with a new coordinator. Finally, Register is a huge target and perfect for young quarterbacks.

OFFENSIVE LINE

1. Alex Leatherwood, Alabama

2. Trey Smith, Tennessee

3. Isaiah Wilson, Georgia

4. Calvin Ashley, Auburn

5. Austin Deculus, LSU

Farrell’s take: Leatherwood’s size and improved technique should allow him to excel either inside or outside early, and is perfect for the Alabama offense. Smith is a much-needed athletic and physical lineman who will bring aggression to the Vols. Wilson’s size and run blocking is perfect for Sam Pittman’s scheme at Georgia. Ashley could play inside or outside and is an excellent seal blocker for Auburn’s rushing attack. Deculus is a mauler who will be great for LSU’s power run attack.

DEFENSIVE END

1. Zachary Carter, Florida

2. K’Lavon Chaisson, LSU

3. LaBryan Ray, Alabama

4. Robert Beal, Georgia

5. Joshua Paschal, Kentucky

Farrell’s take: I like Carter’s skillset with what the Gators have been doing with rush ends. Chaisson has to remind many of Arden Key and will be used in that role most likely. Ray could be a tackle or end a la Da’Shawn Hand. Beal could be that next great hybrid for Georgia. Paschal is a motor guy who will be tough to handle at either end position.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

1. Tyler Shelvin, LSU

2. Phidarian Mathis, Alabama

3. Elijah Conliffe, Florida

4. MJ Webb, South Carolina

5. Noah Elliss, Mississippi State

Farrell’s take: Shelvin’s ability as a zero technique or as a pocket pushing 3-tech will be welcome at LSU. Mathis has the athleticism to be the next gap-shooting star in Bama’s system. Conliffe could be a big outside guy or work exclusively inside in the Gators scheme and they have done well with big athletes. Webb will hold up blockers to allow the linebackers to run free for the Gamecocks. Elliss is a pocket crusher who will work well with outside talent like Jeffrey Simmons.

LINEBACKER

1. Anthony Hines, Texas A&M

2. Jacob Phillips, LSU

3. Jaden Hunter, Georgia

4. Willie Gay, Mississippi State

5. Dylan Moses, Alabama

Farrell’s take: Hines is perfect as a tackling machine who will be all over the field for Texas A&M. Phillips is that athletic big ‘backer in line with guys like Deion Jones and Kendall Beckwith. Hunter’s quick-twitch athleticism will allow him to cover a ton of ground and get off the edge for Georgia. Gay’s length and instincts will lead to early playing time in Starkville. Finally, I’m not as high on Moses as some others but inside linebackers at ‘Bama don’t fail.

SAFETY

1. JaCoby Stevens, LSU

2. Grant Delpit, LSU

3. Xavier McKinney, Alabama

4. Richard LeCounte, Georgia

5. Maleik Gray, Tennessee

Farrell’s take: Stevens and Delpit are both rangy, close well and have excellent athleticism. McKinney can play safety or even some corner if needed so his versatility fits Alabama's system well. LeCounte is physical and a ball hawk who can play aggressively and close to the line of scrimmage. Gray could grow into a linebacker but if he doesn’t he’s going to make a ton of plays as a big strong safety in the Vols' scheme.

1. G.O.A.T. BY POSITION

Tom Brady is the Greatest of All Time (G.O.A.T.). He’s the best quarterback I’ve ever seen and I’ve been watching football since I was 6-years-old. That means, in my mind, Michigan has bragging rights at that position.

Here’s what programs can brag on having the G.O.A.T. at each position when it comes to NFL greatness since 1976.

Quarterback: Tom Brady, Michigan – Now with five Super Bowl wins, Brady gets the nod over Joe Montana (Notre Dame), Dan Marino (Pitt), Peyton Manning (Tennessee), John Elway (Stanford) and others.

Running Back: Barry Sanders, Oklahoma State – This is a close one, at least for me, with Eric Dickerson (SMU), Walter Payton (Jackson State) and Emmitt Smith (Florida) also in the conversation. Marshall Faulk (San Diego State) also gets a shout-out as does Earl Campbell (Texas) but Sanders was the best and most electric of them all.

Wide Receiver: Jerry Rice, Mississippi Valley State – Where are the Delta Devils fans out there? This one isn’t close at all with Randy Moss (Marshall) being the only one comparable that I’ve seen. Time will tell if Julio Jones (Alabama) can approach these two.

Tight End: Tony Gonzalez, Cal – The former college football and basketball star is the best I’ve ever seen. Rob Gronkowski (Arizona) is up there as well, and he is still working on his numbers and impact. Kellen Winslow (Missouri) was also great.

Offensive Line: John Hannah, Alabama – The former Roll Tide and New England Patriots star is followed closely by Anthony Munoz (USC), Bruce Matthews (USC) and Orlando Pace (Ohio State).

Defensive End: Reggie White, Tennessee – “The Minister of Defense” edges out Bruce Smith (Virginia Tech) for No. 1 here in my book, so brag on Vols fans.

Defensive Tackle: Joe Green, North Texas – “Mean Joe” was incredible, followed closely by Randy White (Maryland). Many of the greats at the position were before my time but I remember being awed by these two.

Linebacker: Lawrence Taylor, North Carolina – Is there any question here? Taylor changed the way the position was played and is well ahead of Ray Lewis (Miami), Jack Lambert (Kent State) and Mike Singletary (Baylor).

Cornerback: Deion Sanders, Florida State – Sanders, although a reluctant tackler, gets the nod over Rod Woodson (Purdue) and Charles Woodson (Michigan) at least for me.

Safety: Ronnie Lott, USC – The Trojans get on the board here with the amazing Lott who had his broken pinkie finger amputated in 1986 rather than miss time with reconstructive surgery. He gets my nod over Ed Reed (Miami) and Brian Dawkins (Clemson). And no, I don’t have Troy Polamalu in the same category as Lott, Reed and Dawkins.

2. MORE 2017 RECRUITING NUGGETS

Here are a few interesting tidbits about the 2017 recruiting cycle that I came across doing some research last week.

- Arkansas signed the highest-ranked cornerback in the SEC in Chevin Calloway. That’s a pretty big deal for the Hawgs when you consider the success the SEC has had recruiting the position in years past. With LSU and Florida battling it out for DBU bragging rights recently and Nick Saban’s success in the secondary, this is actually quite a stunner.

- LSU landed only three of the top 10 players in Louisiana for 2017 and Texas landed zero of the top 10 players in Texas. To give you an idea of how insane that statistic is, take a look back at how much those two programs have dominated our Louisiana and Texas state rankings over the years.

- The Big 12 was the only Power Five conference to fail to land a Rivals100 running back despite the state of Texas producing two of them (J.K. Dobbins and Eno Benjamin). The conference also failed to land a Rivals100 offensive lineman as well with Lone Star State linemen heading to Stanford (Walker Little) and LSU (Austin Deculus). The ACC is the only Power Five conference to be shut out of the Rivals100 at linebacker after USC stole Levi Jones from Florida State.

- Oklahoma landed a top 10 California prospect (Addison Gumbs) for the third time in four years.

- For the first time since 2008, the top-ranked prospect in Florida, Texas, California and Georgia all went out of state. The top-ranked 2017 prospects in Florida (Alex Leatherwood) and California (Najee Harris) signed with Alabama. The best that Texas had to offer inked with Florida State (Marvin Wilson) and the top Georgia prospect signed with Stanford (Davis Mills).

TideSaint, do you have OG Dylan Wonnum out of GA on the offer list. I read somewhere he got a UA offer junior day. On Miller it looks he took a ton of unofficials to Auburn last year per 247, so he may take some convincing. It is early yet though.

I got bored and put together a 2018 class mock, it has way to many spots considering this is likely to be a smaller class and much of it I pulled out of thin air with no knowledge of known leaders or priority positions by the staff. But I thought it would be funny to look back in a year and see how wrong I was. I am not including Parks, Brannon, and Bulovas.

QB-Jaylen Mayden TX
RB-Damien Pierce GA
WR-Justyn Ross AL
WR-Seth Williams AL
OG-Jamaree Salyer GA
OG-Tank Jenkins AL
OG-Dylan Wonnum GA
OT-Tommy Brown-CA

DT-Dare Rosenthal LA
DT-Teair Tart Spencer MS
DT-Akial Byers AK
DE-Dorian Hardy NJ
DE-Eyabi Anoma-MD
CB-Kelvin Joseph LA (LSU commit)
CB-Josh Jobe FL (Miami commit)
CB-Issac Taylor Stewart FL
S-Myles Mason AL
S-Tyreke Johnson FLA
ATH-Xavier Williams

No LBs or TEs so that probably will be a big miss on my part. Are there any LBs that look like they might be a strong possibility for this class this early in the cycle?

He definitely could be but to be fair to Wade, I don't remember him saying anything on the record about flipping, most of what was said was speculation by reporters. Joseph has already stated he almost flipped.
