Exactly.
Talking up the performance of a player who struggles with pressure doing well only after the team amassed a 30 point lead is reaching.... and badly.
Had we not had Hurts as an option that game is VERY different.

Completely agree with that. That Malzahn playbook looked completely out of sync. No timing or rhythm aside from the very first play to Stewart.

Not if he can graduate in 3 years.
As a grad transfer, he could go anywhere (outside the SEC), play immediately, and since his first year was a redshirt, he'd have two left to play.
As someone else said up thread, if Hurts takes over (and barring injury or some inexplicable massive collapse, that is a done deal) and Kiffin gets a head job this off season, it would make complete sense for Barnett to go with him.
He looked fine when he came back in with a lead and he will very likely make a fine college quarterback but he's not Jalen Hurts. He's good enough to play and star somewhere, just not here. If/when he leaves, I hope he does well.
Bateman, on the other hand, I can see staying. He's not young with next level potential. His transfer opportunities would be to go the Morris/Ely route and head to a mid-major or a bottom tier P5 program for nothing more than the chance to start. On the other hand, he can spend his last year at Bama where he'll be the starting holder - which is a very important job and one he has done the last two seasons without a single frickup - and get regular playing time at QB behind Hurts while Tua redshirts.

that's the decision he'll be making, if we're gonna go ahead and say that hurts will be the starter.

But he'd have only one year left to play at Bama with no guarantee he could beat out Tua and whomever else Bama signed between now and then. Compare that to graduating in three, picking a place where you're very likely start, and playing for two years. For a kid from California that may have an NFL arm, there's really not a lot to think about.

I like Barnett I really do. He made nice passes right on the money. I think he is def good enough to play for us.....
However, Hurts adds that dimension you absolutely cannot forget, his athleticism. His run up the middle was child's play along with his stroll into the corner of the end-zone. If you noticed his face, it was stone cold. The kid is just good and could be great. His throw to ridley on the sideline was so fast the camera couldn't even find it. And his frozen rope to Stewart was 55 yards with almost no arc. I don't know many kids who can do that.
Lastly he is a cool customer. The kid just plays and doesn't let crap bother him. I've heard from several people that he has a lot of respect from the team.

Just off of what he did Saturday should have garnered him major support/respect from the team. Not to mention the other stuff that has gone down.
I think one thing that's apparently lost is how quickly Bateman has disappeared from the discussion. That right there tells you what kind of talent and ability the coaches see in both Jalen and Blake.

If you're talking about the one for a first down early in the 2nd quarter where Hurts was rolling to his left, that's the one that sold me.
I was kicked back in the recliner. When he fired that rifle shot, I sat straight up and said "wow, I see what they mean now"
AJ McCarron will be a starting NFL quarterback very soon and he couldn't have made that throw like Hurts did.

There is virtually no way Barnett or Hurts will sit on the bench to wait for one season as a starter.
I also expect the kid from Hawaii will sign somewhere else.
Thems the breaks when you have two talented freshmen. Relatively speaking, not all that bad a problem to have. Auburn would take it. And some wrote off Barnett before he ever even took a snap.

Yeah obviously one of BB or Hurts will leave. I'm guessing it will be BB because of how he struggles with pressure.
I don't think Tua goes though.
Basically every place that he had interest in has a freshman or first/second year starter with years to play (USC, FSU, Texas, etc) except Oregon and they aren't really recruiting well right now.

Whoever starts, we will finally have a super talented QB and one on the bench that is better than most of the QBs in the SEC.

i agree, but i'm looking at the past success of two recent bama qbs who didn't start til their senior year is all.

Actually there's a video out there that shows Hurts made the right decision to keep it, and had Harris not pulled on it a little too hard, Hurts probably would have has a 10+ yard run. Just first game jitters by both players.

Because he ran that exact play like a million times in high school and practice most likely. That is like the easiest read for a true freshman to make.

I'm not saying it's a difficult play, but an easy pop pass behind the line to give him some confidence would have made more sense.
