Article detailing AJ's game a bit more.

Worth noting that Cincy's OL didn't play well all night. Neither Dalton or AJ had a lot of time to throw from what I saw.

I thought AJ played fine. The announcers were being annoying assholes though, and I usually enjoy Gruden. They kept downing AJ because he wasn't throwing downfield.

Well guys, when your Oline is hot trash, and the defense is playing prevent, it's pretty idiotic to throw it downfield just to do it.

I thought he played smart, and he orchestrated their only TD of the night.

Exactly. He was taking what the D gave him and it gave him 8 points

Exactly. You don't have to make big plays all the time. AJ engineered a 12 play, 80 yard 8 point drive where he completed 10 passes. He didn't force the ball like Dalton, he took what he was supposed to. Saban and company taught him well.

Bengals cut Josh Johnson, clear way for A.J. McCarron as backup

The Bengals are apparently confident A.J. McCarron is ready to be their backup quarterback.

Via Paul Dehner of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Bengals released quarterback Josh Johnson today, cutting loose the journeyman who represented the only real challenge to McCarron being a play away from the field.

The Bengals also have Keith Wenning in camp, but jettisoning Johnson makes it clear that McCarron is their guy behind Andy Dalton.

McCarron has been bothered by shoulder problems, but insists they are nothing to worry about. The 2014 fifth-rounder may be the only quarterback the Bengals in reserve, so they must trust him implicitly.

Their HC has had a lot of good things to say about AJ. Cincy fans seem tired of Dalton, if he has a very terrible game AJ could get a chance.

PFF Grade for McCarron's debut:

quote:

— A rough night all round for the Bengals was perfectly encapsulated by the performance of Andy Dalton (-0.7). His two interceptions combined poor play on his part (a wild high miss down the seam to Tyler Eifert) with miscues by others to keep the rough night going (a drop by A.J. Green that led to a pick-six). A.J. McCarron’s NFL debut (-1.5) failed to pressure Dalton’s standing as the starter, but Dalton’s performance did little to allay fears that he has already reached his potential.

Were all variables considered when they came up with this conclusion?

It'd be cool to see Big Mike find the field eventually as a converted TE to OL.

Great fit, ZBS.

Saw he didn't get his 5.5 million though. 2.5 with additional incentives that can hit over 4 million.

At least he made it onto a roster. He'll do good in that offense.

Saw somewhere that some teams offered him more money (as much $5.5M) but he wanted to play for a contender.

RT @Joe_Fann: Practice over. DeAndrew White was the offensive player of the day. #Alabama

Always thought he was more talented than his stats here would indicate.
