Of course, if that happens, I can pretty much guarantee you Simpson and Milroe will transfer out and maybe even Lonergan too.

Milroe
Simpson
Mack
Lonergan

2-3 of those 4 won’t be here in a year, it’s just a question of which ones leave and which ones stay.

I am content to let it play out but will be watching VERY closely how the careers of Julian Sayin and Austin Mack go because I was a massive fan of Sayin both in terms of his production and how zero drama he was during his recruitment.

I'm now rooting for Milroe because I like what he's said about staying and his leadership during this time. But "He finished sixth in Heisman voting/he's the favorite for next year's Heisman" has become the new equivalent of "Hurts is 26-2 as a starter."

Hurts never received any Heisman votes while at Alabama. Milroe's first season as a starter was better than any season Hurts had. Not a good argument. Milroe was very good last year. When people only focus on the negatives they're showing their stupidity.

I dunno, I have a problem with a QB waiting for someone to come open instead of throwing to the first open receiver they find in standard down and distance situations. I guarantee you that habit is going to be coached out of him.

IF he can get that 1 simple thing coached out of him, his game would be so much more deadly.

Milroe *was* very good last year. Perfect? No. Very good? Yes.

He was SECCG MVP against UGA. He was 6th in the Heisman vote. 65% completion. 35 total TDs. 5th in QB rating. He made a lot of amazing plays.

He has some things he needs to work on, but he *was* very good last year.

Maybe but can he run a complex offense? I’m honestly not sure. He made some big plays, maybe none bigger than the ending of the Auburn game.

However, he also played a bad game vs Michigan. He couldn’t hit a slant pass (or at least the coaches reportedly didn’t trust him). He has terrible touch on short passes.

He didn’t have the best pass protection but he also held on to the ball WAAAAAAY too long way too many too many times.

Not saying he can’t do better but it’s a tall order.

Milroe played better against Michigan than Michael Penix did. Milroe had the highest completion rate of anyone Michigan played in 2023.

Perfect? No. Dogshit? No.

The key to DeBoer/Grubb's offense is the horizontal stretch caused by both pass and run concepts that creates opportunities for explosive vertical passes.

The concern I have is that the Brian Kelly/Tommy Rees offense is similar philosophically in the passing game and Milroe really didn't take to it so the offense had to be modified dramatically in-season. Yes, I know Rees was calling the Alabama offense but the Alabama offense contains all the nomenclature and concepts to execute what Tommy knew from ND. We were trying to do it early in the season and had to scrap a lot of it to suit the QB's strengths.

Milroe did not play better against Michigan than Penix. Milroe had a higher completion percentage but for only 116 yards. You could not have watched both games and come away from the playoffs with that opinion. That's boxscore watcher stuff.

Penix had 2 INTs. He had more yards because he threw the ball more than twice as much. Their yards per attempt were the same.

Neither played well.

And Milroe played worse than Penix. It is a bigger crime as a quarterback to miss open receivers mentally than physically. Penix made some poor throws in that game under duress but his eyes were still high even after getting harassed all game. Milroe just didn't see guys because only Jalen and God knows what he was looking at...

Austin Mack - Tall with an intermediate level release. His release point is close to on par with that of Simpson but with his height an intermediate level release, his release is much quicker than that of Simpson and slightly better than that of Lonergan. Quieter body and feet in than Simpson in the pocket but not quite as clean as that of Lomergan. Arm strength is on Par with Simpson and better than that of Lonergan.

When I watched the tape of Mack and realized the classification issue, it took a lot of the sting out of losing Sayin to the portal, for sure.

Mack is 6'6 with good mobility and can definitely rip it. 3500 yards with 40 TDs and 5 INTs as a junior in the classification he played in is pretty damn good, so I was puzzled as to why his rating was lower. But then I saw the stuff about him skipping his senior season to reclassify into 2023 and go to Washington a year early.

Mack would have likely been a Top 5 QB in the 2024 class had he not reclassified. Mack is actually a year younger than Sayin, and already has a year of college development in the KDB/Grubb system under his belt.

I'm curious if DeBoer wanted to bring in Mack because he was losing Sayin or if he wanted to bring in Mack because he thought he was good enough to bring in even if it meant pushing out Sayin.

Might sound like sour grapes but I would rather have Mack than Sayin. He's already got a year in DeBoer's system.

Sayin is a big time prospect. I hate to lose him but Mack looks the part. His familiarity with the system is a big edge but developing chemistry with the receivers is his limitation.

We have a guy from Washington that he likely has some practice with already. So he's probably ahead of Sayin there too.

Mack doesn't turn 18 until June, and already has a year of college development under his belt before his 18th birthday.

Sayin turns 20 in November. He is a full year and a half older than Mack.

KDB's making Mack a take, even if it pissed off Sayin, is starting to make a lot more sense.

Be careful not to step too far out on that limb just yet. While Mach has size, tools, and experience as the back-up to the back-up for 8 months, he is still VERY raw. He has still not been under fire at the college level.

He has a head start mentally (knowing what to do and what to look at). He does not have experience under fire. He MAY turn out to be exceptional. He may crumble in the fire.

Milroe may step up to the challenge. He may fall on his face attempting to learn the mental side. He may grasp the mental side but not be able to execute it in the time needed.

Same arguments go for Simpson and Lonergan. This spring will be huge. The summer with the WR's will be critical. August, by the second scrimage things should be showing signs of who is ready to face the heat and who is not. The UGA game will likely be when we know if one of the 4 has the IT factor or if this will be a rough season.

I dont think Mack will start or play much. He is young, and I think he came here expecting to wait his turn and develop. He does have some advantage of already being exposed to the Washington offense and its terminology, though. Ill say this about the championship game though. Washington didnt get any favors from the refs. Michigan was constantly grabbing the Washington receives jerseys and holding, pulling them and they got no calls.. Plus there was a long pass completion by Washington that got called back for holding, and there was no holding. That was a huge play in the game.
