You watch his film, the kid clearly has a big arm on him and a nice touch on the ball. Since he has a year in DeBoer’s system, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him win the starting job.
Of course, if that happens, I can pretty much guarantee you Simpson and Milroe will transfer out and maybe even Lonergan too.

OB Battle over the next 3 to 7 months
#1 issue will be who can learn the system and make the reads. Mack has a 8 month headstart.
Ty Simpson - High release with alot of juice but his movement is very jerky. Ty seems to be best on the move moreso than in the pocket. Pre-snap reads appear to be pretty good. His foot placement is reasonably good but not great. Because his release is so high, it is also a bit slow.
Dylan Lonergan - intermediate level release with a relatively quick action. Pretty good juice on the ball coming out but not quite as strong as that of Simpson. Very quiet and clean body movement in the pocket with very good foot placement. Pre-snap reads from HS looked to be pretty good but not enough info since then. Post-snap reads from HS looked to be very good but not enough info since then.
Austin Mack - Tall with an intermediate level release. His release point is close to on par with that of Simpson but with his height an intermediate level release, his release is much quicker than that of Simpson and slightly better than that of Lonergan. Quieter body and feet in than Simpson in the pocket but not quite as clean as that of Lomergan. Arm strength is on Par with Simpson and better than that of Lonergan.
Ball placement / acuracy - all 3 look to be pretty good but Lonergan looks to be the best.
Throwing WR open - Lonergan looks to be the best with Mack very close. Simpson trails Mack a little bit.
Running when a play breaks down - hands down, SImpson is the best. Lonergan looks to be a little better than Mack.
Pocket presence - Mack then Lonergan then Simpson
Leadership - I have no clue
Jalen Milroe - I did not include him in the comparison. We have all seen what he is good at and where he has issues. I am assuming he is the leader for the first snap of spring and the others would have to show who is #2 before they can try to overtake Milroe. Milroe leadership may be his best asset and will be a tough thing for the others to beat.

Yeah Mack played in the best league in Northern California vs powerhouse programs.

I may be wrong but I suspect it’s going to be very apparent very quickly that Milroe can’t make reads to run this offense. On the other hand, Milroe may astonish everyone and thrive.

Let’s just see if Milroe makes progression to the next level. Best part about having a new coach is he has no loyalties to anyone who is on the team from before so he will put the best QB on the field to run HIS offense. 2. He is an offensive minded coach so there won’t be as much conservatism on offense to like CNS had. 3. He is an offensive minded coach with an excellent OC and QB coach so chances are we will see elite level improvement at the position from all of the QBs on the team.
I really don’t want this offseason to turn into a QB battle between the fans. For the first time in 15 yrs we actually don’t k ow what to expect. It’s exciting and we should just relax and enjoy the show. There’s time to melt later if the wheels come off.

I have my doubts that Milroe can become a great passing quarterback but I'm willing to see what happens because he could be an unstoppable force if his ability to throw matched his ability to run. I don't think we'd even know for sure in the Spring because attrition probably means that the secondary is going to be a mess until they can supplement in the Spring transfer portal.

Watching that breakdown of his reads and progressions, plus the similarity of that to Washington's offense, makes me think these concepts will be more in-line with what KD/RG will be trying to do for us.

The famous California Catholic schools like mater Dei and St John Bosco play in a different division entirely, the open division. Folsom is probably the top public high school football program in California for the last 12 years or so
Mack's team won the San Joaquin Section championship but lost in the state division 1 semis. Sayin's team never win the San Diego section any of the 3 years he started
