McElwain was the throw it up to Julio in the red zone with a QB not accurate enough despite the fact that he was cover by three players.

Yea, that used to drive me nuts (specifically the 2009 Tennessee game when we did it 3 straight plays).

However, he's also the guy who schemed the 2009 Florida game and 2011 BCS Title game scripts to perfection.

Name one of those the majority of people want back including Saban who has yet to go after any of them for the open position.

I'm sure McElwain is just itching at a chance to leave an SEC head coaching job and run back to Bama as OC...

We put up some pretty awesome numbers in '12 and '13 when Nuss was calling plays...three 1,000 yard rushers in 2 seasons, one 1,000 yard receiver, and our first 3,000+ yard passing QB (and first 30+ passing TD QB to boot). Whatever problems Saban had with Nussmeier, I don't think they had to do with results...

And what Kiffin did with the talent we had at QB in his 3 years was borderline phenomenal...he had to change the offense each year to match the QB's skills...again, not wanting Kiffin back would have nothing to do with his results...

As for the majority of fans not wanting prior OCs back, if you've been a Bama fan for long, you should realize by now that most of our fans have rarely been happy with the offensive coordinator...especially in the post-Bear years...

Daboll may get major resistance from his wife and five kids about leaving Foxboro. He may decide to just stay put with the Patriots as their next-OC-in-waiting. If so, I wonder if Godsey will be offered the OC job and accept it, or if Saban might hire Dan Werner as OC or Co-OC.

That's because he called one of the dumbest plays in Alabama football history. In that one play, we went from a 99% chance of beating Auburn to a 15% chance.

That's how bad it was.

Looks like Alabama went internal to find its new Director of Football Ops. Ellis Ponder, who was the Assistant DFO, is poised to move up.
10:43 AM - 16 Feb 2017

On Wednesday, it was reported that Justin Dickens was leaving the position after serving in the role since 2015. He also held the position at Michigan, where he was transferred in 2014 after three years as the Wolverines’ public and media relations’ director.

"Insider" on BOL is saying Daboll is a done deal.

Our three hires appear to be final:

Daboll - Offensive Coordinator
Locksley - Wide Receivers
Pannunzio - Tight Ends/Special Teams

That shite almost killed me. Let's all give a moment of silence to the Stalings' offenses too. I wasn't old enough to drink then, or I would have

So Daboll is the "QB Coach" then I guess?

If he can gain 20lbs, we all better be prepared for the Macsiah era. Don't know if that's good or bad

I remember that game...it wasn't that bad of a call. The RB caught the pass and then fumbled...we might've fumbled if he'd called a run as well. Freddie Kitchens and Dabo Swinney both thought it was a great call...but somebody missed a block and Scissum fumbled, so it's a terrible call...

Looks that way, for now, with only 9 on-field positions. Hopefully, Dan Werner will also be hired, as an analyst temporarily until the 10th assistant coach is OK'd.

Alabama could bolster its staff with former Ole Miss OC Dan Werner | Saturday Down South
quote:

Alabama is looking for a new offensive coordinator, but the play-caller may not be the only big addition to the Crimson Tide’s offensive staff. In what has become a signature Nick Saban move, a former offensive coordinator could reportedly join UA in an off-the-field role, and this one has SEC ties.

Aaron Suttles @AaronSuttles
Busy day for news: Also heard that Dan Werner could be added to Alabama staff as an offensive analyst. Werner has experience developing QBs.
10:21 AM - 16 Feb 2017

Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze made major changes after the 2016 season, in which the Rebels went 5-7, including letting go of Dan Werner, his co-offensive coordinator for the past five seasons in Oxford. Werner worked with Bo Wallace, Chad Kelly and Shea Patterson during his Ole Miss tenure, and could be a big help in developing Alabama’s young signal-callers.

Adding Werner to the staff could also be a sign that Saban wants to maintain spread elements in his offense. Former Alabama QB AJ McCarron told a radio station that he sees the offensive coordinator hire as Saban facing a decision about whether to go back to a more pro-style offense, like the ones seen under Jim McElwain and Doug Nussmeier, or to continue to use more spread elements a la Lane Kiffin.

New England Patriots tight ends coach Brian Daboll is reportedly the leading candidate to be the next play-caller at Alabama, and his background is with pro-style offenses as a longtime NFL assistant. Werner’s off-field input could lead to a balanced approach.

The offensive analyst job at Alabama has become a stepping stone to joining the Crimson Tide staff under Saban. After being fired at USC, Steve Sarkisian took an analyst position on Alabama’s staff for the 2016 season. Sarkisian was later promoted to offensive coordinator and recently accepted the same position with the Atlanta Falcons. After staff changes at Maryland, former Terrapins offensive coordinator and interim head coach Mike Locksley also joined UA as an offensive analyst. He has recently been promoted to the on-field staff.

Alabama staffer following Steve Sarkisian to Atlanta | AL.com
quote:

Charlie Weis Jr., the son of former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, is following Steve Sarkisian to Atlanta.

Weis, who had worked as an offensive analyst at Alabama last year, will join Sarkisian's staff as an offensive assistant, the Falcons announced on Friday. Weis had previously been expected to join Lane Kiffin's Florida Atlantic staff, with Kiffin telling reporters before the Peach Bowl in December that he had already signed a contract. As of Friday morning, he was still listed on FAU's website as the program's tight ends coach.

The younger Weis impressed Kiffin behind the scenes at Alabama and earned the reputation of a young coach on the rise.

"I think he's a really special coach," Kiffin said. "Really intelligent. Kid is way ahead of his time. He was in college at Florida with (Will) Muschamp and his dad and he's in there breaking down film and doing gameplans as a college kid. He's way ahead of the game, high IQ and really intelligent."

He is the first staffer to join Sarkisian in his new role as the Falcons' offensive coordinator. Alabama has yet to hire a replacement for Sarkisian who coached a single game as offensive coordinator, the national championship game, before leaving the program for the NFL.

Are we planning on actually officially hiring Deboll or are we just going to have him walk out onto the practice field in a few weeks?

I know these things don't happen overnight but there has been this sort of general "yea it's Daboll", "we're reporting its Daboll", "Ok its Daboll" thing out there for almost 3-4 days now..............and nothing.
