Bama is on top of the football world right now, but in a few years who is to say what will happen? You laugh but Bama fans with memories longer then goldfish can remember back before Saban got here and Bama was mediocre at best for a long run.

Frankly this is the sort of myopic thinking that helped Texas destroy two great conferences. Every school adds something to the SEC, hell Vanderbilt more then most, their status as a private institution is invaluable to the SEC when it comes to keeping things a secret.

So think about all that money Bama could reap if they went independent... playing Sun Belt teams for the first decade or so. Most SEC teams have their OOC schedules lined up years in advance and it would probably be several years before someone had room to schedule the Tide. You would just be another OOC team out there for us, no obligation to play you. So goodbye to the Iron Bowl and that Saturday in October with Tenn.

I would love to see Bama try to go the independent route, only to have every other SEC team refuse to play them. Then, of course, all the other BIg 5 conference programs would probably not want to play them when they can get a much easier team instead. Of course, they will have to travel and actually do Home and Homes so the expenses will start adding up, especially since most of the decent sized football programs close by are SEC. Their other teams will turn to shite without a conference schedule. This might affect their strength of schedule just a bit. Oh, and instead of getting 15mill or so for bowl revenue, they can be content with the sub 10-mill they will get no matter how big a bowl they can get into. They will be able to have their very own Gump network no doubt, though. In the burgeoning metropolises of Alabama, it will be huge.

So is it fair teams like Vandy and Kentucky who bring nothing in get the same money as Alabama and Miss State?

They bring plenty. Do you want to screw it up like the B12 did? They contribute by being opponents for teams that are representing in the higher paying bowls. It works better the way it is divided. Disproportionate distribution would cause more separation; not less. It has helped us in the bad years with the even distribution.

And that does what on the basketball end for revenue right now? Kentucky produces about $8 million after expenditures and was a cornerstone of the SEC Network going forward.

I'm not advocating that the revenue shouldn't be evenly split, just pointing out that Alabama is #2 in basketball behind Kentucky. It's not like they are at the bottom of the historical standings.

Your $87.5mil number isn't even close.

But as a fan of the school that's bringing the cash cow this year, no. Even distribution of wealth in the SEC is the tide that is lifting/has lifted all ships.

Actually its dead on.

$50 million base to the SEC
$6 million to the conference for Alabama (Sugar Bowl — CFP semifinal)
$4 million to the conference for Ole Miss (Peach Bowl)
$27.5 million to the conference for Mississippi State (Orange Bowl)

Plus the smaller bowls.

Folks around here are like spoiled children! We feed'em, cloth'em, put a roof over their heads and send them to schools....but all they can do is bitch about us! I guess they're ALL our children.

Absolutely not.

We've already done the Big 12 and there's a reason that conference is in the toilet.

Fans may wish that their conference rivals would suffer, but a good commish wants every team to have the best facilities, top recruiting classes, elite coaches, and loads of cash.

Better for all teams and better for getting a team (or two) into the playoffs.

When Bama was sucking I bet this never crossed his mind. Greed is a nasty scourge indeed.

$3.5mil Outback
$4.25mil Citrus
$2.75mil Gator
$1.1mil Birmingham
= $21.6875 million
= $109.1875 million

So, no, $87.5million is not what I would consider close.

I agree that a larger percentage of the revenue for each bowl game should go to the participant. In other words, from your example, OM, Bama, and State should get at least 33% of the payout with the other 2/3 going to the conference. There should be a little more financial reward for each particpating team.

to the op
the set up the sec has is one of the primary reasons for the greatness of the sec. if you change it, you get the big12. wasnt the big12 payout set up one of the primary reasons for texag and mizzou leaving. texas and oklahoma kept all the money. do you really want to be the big12? i dont. i like being the big dog on the porch. keep it like it is so we stay that way.

Don't be fooled by the Aggie caterwauling about Texas on this board... they, too, voted for unequal revenue distribution (along with Nebraska). They also voted not to have a conference network.

Now, they howl constantly about it, but fail to look in the mirror.

And what's up with Arkansas blaming Texas for the end of the Southwest Conference? The Razorbacks took a better offer and left (good for you), but don't fool yourself, that was the beginning of the end.

The psychological projections from the Arkansas, A&M and Missouri (and Nebraska) fanbases make my head spin.

Don't be fooled by this bullshite talking point.

The network offered to Bill Byrne split the operating costs 50/50 and the profits 70/30 in Texas' favor. There was never an offering for a conference network.

Also, as a private school, Vanderbilt keeps interconference correspondence from being subject to FOIA requests.

Arky didn't decide to pick up and leave b/c of Texas flirting with the Pac-10 behind everyone's backs. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
