Anybody catch the documentary short on espn about the media witch hunt and frame-job of Georgian Richard Jewell last night? (It's only 20 minutes or so long. You can watch it here if you're interested.... LINK......) It's pretty fascinating..

I remember the name and face vividly from when this happened. And I also remember hearing that he was eventually exonerated. But, I was too young to appreciate just what a fricking despicable crime that the media and fbi and knee-jerk society and etc committed against this innocent man.....

Anybody else remember this deal and where you were when it went down?

Remember it well. I was an elementary school kid then but remember my parents talking about how much of a raw deal he got. What makes it worse is that he wasn't just a random person that was falsely accused, he was actually actively involved in helping during that situation. Sad stuff.

I saw that too. I had forgotten about that. I was in High School then, so only a few things were on my mind.

Went without a job for a while, then got a job for $8/hr. He was publicly ridiculed and made fun of, when in fact he was a hero.

Died in 2007 at 44.

We had gone to a Brooks & Dunn concert at the plaza in Underground Atlanta earlier that evening & were attending a private party at the Georgia Freight Depot when we heard about it. It was a Fri. night about 1:30 in the morning IIRC...

Yes, I remember it sadly even though he was somewhat vindicated in the end it killed him nonetheless.

CNN made its stand on his guilt and nobody would publish the truth until years later then it was buried by design on the back pages of obscure newspapers.

Bill Campbell (Atlanta Mayor) needed a scapegoat to hide his corruption and RJ was a gift-horse.

On another note:

I remember riding into Atlanta on I-20 during the Olympic construction and looking over at the humongous pile of concrete pilled up from where they demolished Fulton County stadium wondering what in the hell were they going to do with it all...

Same beat, different drum. The integrity of journalism (if it ever had any to begin with) died out a long time ago.

I remember that night vividly. I was 24yo and my parents still lived in the same house in Marietta with the two spare bedrooms my brother and I use to have there. My parents invited two Olympian shot put and discus throwers from Norway to stay with them while they competed.

Well that particular day, these two guys had the day off. I can't remember if they were done competing already or why, it's been so long, but all I know is, my parents asked me to entertain them a few times during the 3 weeks they were here.

These dude's were freakin hilarious and crazy as frick. First of all, both of them were like 6'7 300 lbs, blond hair blue eyed pasty white skin and just massive as frick monsters who spoke like 10 words of English, most of which were curse words and like 3 different kinds of alcohol.

So my buddy and I toss these guys in the back of a Jeep Wrangler with the top off and head down to Underground for a while, then all over Buckhead, then we hit Frankies at the Prado and proceed to get hammered. My buddy takes it easy as he's driving of course.

Anyway, as soon as it gets dark, we're on Peachtree coming back out of Buckhead on our way to House of Blues to watch the concert at Centennial Park, but traffic is slow as hell. These two giant arse drunk Norwegians are literally standing up and hanging out of the Jeep screaming frick knows what are every car around us, shaking up beer cans and opening them on car's windshields and into open sunroofs. People are cheering them on and giving them high-fives all over the place. They are absolutely having the best time of their lives and telling us every 10 seconds how much they love us and love America and American/Georgian women.

And then suddenly we hear the explosion and see the fireball and the smoke. We were only about a quarter-mile away, maybe a bit closer. And all hell broke loose. People screaming and running. Droves of people running past us yelling to turn around because terrorists blew up a bomb right where we were heading.

It was pretty surreal to say the least. We turned around, headed back to the Prado and just hung out there watching the news of the bombing while drinking and hanging out with people.

I'll never forget these guys though. Just to watch them have fun like they'd never had before, it was great. Thank goodness we weren't at the Park when the bomb went off though. We could have been standing right there, you never know.

There was something odd about the whole story from the begining. It is a shame that he had to endure the hatred

I bet if you took a poll and put his name down as one of the answers as to who actually did it, he would get the most votes.

Everyone in the media, so badly, wanted it to be a redneck security guard from GA...

I remember it well having worked as an attorney for 10 years at that time. I remember the tremendous publicity and the rush to judgment based on news reports which I also deal with quite often today in my job. I thought the ESPN film was interesting where one of his attorneys admitted that even he initially thought Jewell had done it based on the news reports.

I don't think it has been released yet but a movie is in the process of being made about his story. This linked article, which talks about the upcoming film "The Ballad of Richard Jewell", is a well written summary of what happened back at that time. LINK

He was the traffic cop for my elementary school when I was in 6th grade. Later, he became a campus cop at Piedmont. I was in college when the Olympic bombing happened. I just kept thinking, "there's no way. That guy!?!?". Later, when it came out that it was Rudolph, some of us started hiking every weekend to see if we could find that dude.

Former Pres. of Piedmont College fingered Jewell because he was a former Barney Fife type campus cop who way overstepped his boundaries, apparently often making arrests off campus. When the Pres. saw that Jewell was front-and-center at the bombing site, he suggested that the police look at him. Long story short, Jewell sued the school and the Pres. and won.

Can't recall what night it was, but it had to have been before the bombing, we were at Centennial to watch a cirque d soleil show. I got up and went to the bathroom, and when I came out, Chaos had broken out. I was 14 or 15 years old. Bomb dogs, and police lights everywhere. I was separated from my family, and had no clue what was going on. They wouldn't let me try to find my family until after every square inch in and around that place had been secured. It was freaky.

ETA: Maybe it was after the bombing. Here's a quick article I found.

The must despicable part to me is that this type of thing isn't all that unusual. Zimmerman was made out to be a racist not long ago. Just yesterday the headline of the NY Daily News was taken from a parody Twitter account. Fact checking is a thing of the past.

And, of course, those in power know how this machine works.....and how they can use it to help them steer the opinions of the herd in their favor.......

Having trouble getting people to support the invasion and occupation of a foreign country and the slaughter of innocent people??? Hey...No problem!!.....Just float some lies about WMDs and ties to 9/11 to drum up the hatred.......then frighten them with propaganda about "mushroom clouds" on american cities if nothing is done...... And they'll beg for your fricking war!

.....then, a trillion dollars and a towering mound of human skulls later....... I guess, they count on people being too embarrassed at having been duped to point out that every single reason they gave to do it turned out to be a Lie.

It works both ways apparently, because you're obviously one of the gullable masses who still thinks there were no WMD's in Iraq and that it was a lie.

SMH.

It was a lie. On top of lies. and more lies. They never would have invaded Iraq if they thought they actually had WMDs capable of reaching the U.S.......

But, if you want to rationalize it and say that a few dusty stashes of low-grade nothing with a shelf-life that expired 20 years ago are THE nuclear WMDs from the propaganda warnings used to scare us into supporting the war............well..........knock yourself out.

At least, people like you that still believe that horseshite are finally in the minority though. Thank God.
