LSU's starting defensive tackle, Maason Smith, announced Tuesday evening that he has declared for the 2024 NFL Draft.

Smith, a redshirt sophomore from Houma, La., came to LSU as a five-star prospect and had a promising freshman year in 2021 but missed the 2022 season with a torn ACL.

He played 12 games this season and recorded 28 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, and two passes defended.

With Smith and Mekhi Wingo headed to the Draft, LSU will need to replace both starting defensive tackles next season.

Well if the NFL doesn't play out he'll always have that Cum Laude degree to fall back on - uh, never mind.

Again, it's immaterial what he becomes somewhere else at some time in the future. At LSU he was disappointing.
Good luck to him but his level of play won't be missed.

All five stars signees should start with #0 & if they are good enough later earn a # higher than zero.

All these kids think they are going to the NFL. So few make it especially ones whose college career has been marginal at best. Many like Mason think they can just turn it on to succeed at the next level. Again I wish him well but the likelihood of him making a team at all is very remote. Should have stayed.

He won’t be drafted as high as he thinks he will. He should have come back for 1 more season and improved his draft stock.

Needed him to stay. Mostly for him to get back to his freshman year performance and to improve since his injury. But good lick yo you young man.

Did he play much as a true freshman? He only played in the first half (maybe only 1st quarter?) of 1 game in 2022...

Someone gave bad advice. Kid needs another year at college. Those stats above are not telling of a major draft pick.

Hoping he has a long career in the NFL. Thanks for attending your State University and we appreciate your time in Baton Rouge! Pay no attention to those who criticize….

I hope Mason can shake off all these haters better than he shook off 3 star guards.

Is there still time to flip DL Nolan from Ole Piss or Overton from Bama? Most of these guys are COMMITTED but NOT Enrolled. Maybe it ain't too late to do what we should have already done.

I don't even say this selfishly; for his own sake he should come back. If both he and LSU have success next year, he could shoot up draft boards, and if he has another season like the past one, he's no worse off.
Get a good insurance policy and run it back would have been my advice.
Hopefully whoever I counseling him knows more than I do and has his best interests at heart.
