Second Half Comeback Lifts No. 14/13 Alabama Past Ole Miss, 103-88
Aaron Estrada collects the fourth triple-double in program history to lead the Crimson Tide to its 20th win of the season
OXFORD, Miss. – Alabama's Aaron Estrada became the third player in program history to record a triple-double as he helped lead the No. 14/13 Crimson Tide men's basketball team past Ole Miss, 103-88, Wednesday night on the road at the SJB Pavilion. With the victory, UA earned its 20th win of the year (20-8, 12-3 SEC) and has now recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time since 2012-13.
Behind Estrada's performance, Alabama erased a 14-point first half deficit to come back from double digits on the road for the second time in SEC play (won at Georgia). However, it wasn't only Estrada's play that helped lift the team to the win, as Mark Sears scored a team-high 26 points while Davin Cosby came off the bench to contribute a career-best 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from deep.
The Rebels (19-9, 6-9) were led by Allen Flanigan's 28 points off the bench, while Jaemyn Brakefield added 21 points.
Head Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments
"A lot of credit to their (Ole Miss) coaching staff. They were ready to come out and play and we did not do a great job at the start of the game. They were obviously much more ready to play than we were. I give them a lot of credit for having their guys ready to go and we need to do a better job on defense out of the gate. We got down 14 points, and I thought our guys showed a ton of character and a lot of grit. We were down 16 at Georgia, so we've done this before and we have been able to come back. I thought our defense really kicked in the gear and we were able to take a lead and build it up."

Oates owns the SEC, but needs to be better against bigger non conference teams. How did this team lose to Ohio St in Florida and Clemson at home?
Because he had a team that needed to play together a lot before they gelled. Gotta take some lumps.
Bama lost a lot of guys from the previous year *and* brought in a bunch of new guys. Of the112 guys that regularly get minutes only 3 were at Bama last year.
Take Grant Nelson for example. He came in as a guy we thought would be taking lots of 3s and driving to the basket. It took a while to figure out that wasn't what he was going to be successful doing at this level. In non conference play he took 4 or more 3s 6 times (5 were losses). In SEC play he did it once.

if he’d have stayed he’d probably be getting more than he made in that short G league stint
Something about being Canadian made him ineligible for NIL so he wouldn't have made any money staying. I do think he could have played his way into possibly being drafted and making more money that way. His decision was shortsighted.

They've got to have US work visas for US based NIL deals and most are here on student visas, but there are ways around it. Some are signing deals with Canadian based entities so they're "working" in Canada instead of the US.
That aside, he played 11 games in the G league. Their standard salary works out to about $800 a game - meaning he probably grossed less than $10k. He'd have probably gotten more than that at Alabama in $100 handshakes and swag alone to go with the almost $6,000 cash stipend they get as part of their scholarship.

Alabama took a team that lost the vast majority of their offensive production and their two best defensive players, added several transfers and incoming signees, and went into a hellacious OOC schedule. They're tougher than most of these SEC teams that still schedule like just contriving 20 wins any way possible gets you into the bracket.

Davin Cosby Jr. an Unlikely Star in Alabama Basketball's Victory Over Ole Miss (SI)
Averaging 3.1 points on the season, the redshirt freshman guard poured in 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting versus the Rebels.

Bingo. Don't forget he replaced his entire coaching staff as well. OOC was always going to be brutal, when you have that much change you're going to have growing pains regardless of who is on the schedule. Clemson and Ohio St don't look like great losses now but those were lumps taken to build what Bama is entering today.

Cosby will be a factor next season assuming he stays but that is not a given anymore. Any chance Estrada or Wrightsell come back or are they out of eligbility?

Estrada is the only player that can’t return

Estrada has played 5. Wrightsell is playing his 4th now so he could likely come back using the covid year.

I didn't even realize until just now that 6 of our 8 losses are to teams in the top 15(coaches poll).

That's why we are so high in KenPom. Bama has been the highest rated team with whatever amount of loses it's had for almost the entire year because the schedule has been so tough.
The only team with a tougher schedule than Bama so far is Michigan, who is 8-20.
Yet with a win Saturday Bama will be a top 10 team in every poll, have sole possession of the SEC lead, and be sitting on a 2 seed at best and 3 seed at worst.

Only Alabama and Tennessee control the ability to win the SEC outright with 3 games to play. Definitely didn't think this group had it in them back in December.

Wild to think that the main event game the whole country will be watching Saturday, along with college gameday, is in Coleman Coliseum.
Never imagined this in my wildest dreams just 5 short years ago
Defense has had me frustrated this year, but at the same time it’s also potentially Oats best coaching job considering all he lost in the offseason player and personnel wise. The pedestal he’s putting our program on with the rest of college basketball is mind boggling.

Forgot to add in the entire coaching staff turnover. Very few programs withstand these headwinds without a major rebuild year.
Who knows how it ends. They could go 3-0 or 0-3 (I doubt the later) but they've essentially assured no worse than a 4 seed at this juncture regardless of how the season ends. That's impressive.
