I don't know this as a fact but likely that they can put any caliber in the gun pretty easily. They wanted modular and it fits the bill.

Given that other Federal agencies are moving back to 9mm and SF already use other handguns in the calibers they want there is no real justification for inducing such a logistical abortion to the military at large. No commander is going to let their soldiers pick calibers at will, they will choose one and stick with it. The modularity benfit is just a bullshite excuse to waste money.
