Would love to see a full list. I think this captures most of the ones for the SEC in terms of National Title Games and/or bowl games that were played that definitively decided the National Title:

4- Alabama
2021 lost to Georgia
2018 lost to Clemson
2016 lost to Clemson
1971 lost to Nebraska

4- Oklahoma
2008 lost to Florida
2004 lost to USC
2003 lost to LSU
1987 lost to Miami

2- Georgia
2017 lost to Alabama
1982 lost to Penn St

1- Auburn
2013 lost to Florida State

1- LSU
2011 lost to Alabama

1- Texas
2009 lost to Alabama

1- Florida
1995 lost to Nebraska

I believe there are also dozens more back from the old days before there were official national title games.

For Auburn:

1983- lost to Texas in the regular season. Game did not affect our bowl slot. We would have played Michigan in the Sugar Bowl either way. But had Auburn not lost to Texas in Week 2, we would have undoubtedly been 1983 National Champs (should have been anyway)

1958- We were defending National Champs and attained #1 again in 1958 before a 7-7 tie to Georgia Tech tumbled us back down to #5. Had Auburn finished unbeaten/untied a second year in a row, we very likely would hold claim to the 1958 title instead of LSU.

There are not that many teams that can say there were a multitude of games that cost them.

However, for some teams, there are a lot of games.

I know for sure Cam Newton cost us a chance to play for a better post season.

Also West Va was upset by Pitt and allowed us to play OSU in the national title game.

So there is a trade off. But many more games that cost us, vs games that helped us. I think that’s true for most teams out there.

2005 Tennessee did not cost us because Uga throttled us in Sec g.

UGAs defeating Texas in the Cotton Bowl, most likely, cost Texas the NC that year.

Cam cost Arkansas their best chance to win the SEC. Whoever came out of the West was winning the SECCG that year.

I feel like we run the table if Stoerner doesn't fumble in '98

Football fans know better than that. But no one wants to do the homework to figure out just how many big games were lost or won.

In 1994, undefeated Bama lost to Florida 24-23 in the SEC Championship. Might not have had a chance to play for it all though because Nebraska and Penn State were both undefeated as well. Could have ended up with 3 undefeated teams that year

I think the thread would be better suited for discussion regarding regular season losses that cost a team a natty. Of course that's all conjecture. But that's where the discussion comes into play... Rather than just listing games where teams lost in the national championship.

2006 LSU lost to Auburn

This was the infamous Pass Interference no call in the endzone at the end of the game. LSU would have won the SEC west that year, getting a rematch with Florida, who went on to play for the championship against Ohio State. That was one of the best LSU football teams talent wise, especially on defense. LSU ended up finishing as #3 after scull dragging Brady Quinn and Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl.

That’s what I’m asking.

I filled in the obvious ones which are title games. I know for Auburn, there are two additional regular season games that cost us national titles (1958 GT and 1983 TX), but I’m not doing the work for every individual team in the SEC.

I assume fans of each school know their own. Hence the thread.

Bama. These are some regular season games.
2013 iron bowl. Bama blows out FSU if they get past Auburn.
1977 Bama loses to Nebraska in Lincoln. Still should have won the title but with 0 losses and a 38-6 dismantling of Ohio st in the sugar there couldn’t have been an argument.

I have zero idea what you are talking about.

Are you trying to say that had Auburn defeated MSU in 2014 we would have won the national title?

quote:

2010 - Camback (Iron Bowl)

So is this for Bama? Nevermind the fact Bama already had 2 losses (SC and LSU), but even if Bama had snuck into the title game, who’s to say they would have beaten Oregon?

quote:

2017 - SEC Championship (Ugga)

Again? How did this loss exactly cost Auburn a national title? Costing a team a playoff spot is not the same as costing a national title?

UGA 2012 loss to Alabama in SECCG

This one and I’ll add two more:

2007 - South Carolina (we were the hottest team in the country by seasons end but because we dropped this game to a bad SC team, we weren’t in ATL to face LSU and presumably take on Ohio State)

2002 - Florida (the only blemish on a 13-1 season. Arguable if the computers would have had us jump OSU to play Miami but for the first time since the Herschel years, we had the he team to compete)

The 2013 loss to Auburn only cost Bama an SEC West title.

There are no guarantees you would have defeated Missouri or Florida State.

Again, this is not how many games did your team lose that cost you a chance to keep playing for the title.
