For all the talk about and comparison between Pearl and Oats the better Alabama coach to be comparing Pearl with given his 12 seasons at Alabama is Wimp. With all due respect to Coach Pearl who is a great coach, his Auburn resume doesn't even match up to Wimp's resume, much less Nate's.

Wimp Sanderson (1981-1992) - 12 seasons at Alabama

Overall record: 267-119 (69.2%)
SEC regular season titles: 1
SEC tourney titles: 5
Overall NCAAT record: 12-10 (54.5%)
Sweet 16s: 6
Elite 8s: 0
Final 4s: 0

Bruce Pearl (2015 - 2024) - 10 seasons at Auburn

Overall record: 200-119 (62.7%)
SEC regular season titles: 2
SEC tourney titles: 2
Overall NCAAT record: 7-5 (58.3%)
Sweet 16s: 1
Elite 8s: 1
Final 4s: 1

Other than Pearl's 1 magical run to the Final 4 in 2019 and his 2 SEC regular season titles compared to Wimp's 1, Wimp has the better resume. Bruce needs to win 67 games the next two seasons to match Wimp's overall win total thru 12 seasons.

Too bad the Auburn resume doesn't sum up his career even though his Auburn resume already makes him legendary for what he was able to do at Auburn.

Wimp didn’t have to build a program from scratch following CM Newton like Bruce did following Tony Barbee salting the earth. Bruce gets a pass for his for first seasons because he had literally build the program from scratch. Wimp took over a winning program.

Bad take. You can't compare the 2-3 because they are incomparable. Auburn was in farrrrr worse shape than UA when Pearl took over. Oats had it bad but not as bad as BP. What Pearl has done considering where the program was before him, is unreal. Both are great. Find it funny as soon as UA tastes success again they want to turn into a pecker measuring contest. Unreal fan base.

Wimp wasted more talent at Alabama than any coach in the school’s history.

Bruce Pearl is a much better coach than Wimp Sanderson, given what Pearl has done with a program that was inarguably in the bottom 2 of the SEC historically when he arrived.

Can you compare Marc Richt at Georgia to James Franklin at Vandy next?

Now let’s compare the basketball history of the two schools.
Why are Bama fans always here seeking validation. It’s pretty sad.

“All the talk” actually means “I wanted to post this so I pretended there’s been lots of talk.”

The SEC only had 10 teams for almost 100% of Wimp’s tenure. The fact Wimp only won one regular season title in an SEC that featured no Arkansas, no South Carolina, no Missouri, no Texas A&M… and was before the rise of Florida athletic dominance that started in the early ‘90s is a major red flag on his resume.

He also inherited a program that was doing quite well at the time compared to Bruce who had to dig Auburn out of a grave for the first 4-5 seasons.

Looking at Bruce’s overall win%, SEC record, etc. isn’t really a fair judgement of his coaching talent. Name one other coach who’s achieved his level of success that took over such a rebuilding job.

Since 2017-2018, Bruce’s winning % is 72.4%. In the last seven seasons, he’s just 3 games back from having the best record in SEC play during that time.

Bruce after building a foundation is way more impressive than Wimp on his foundation. Not even close really.

Wimp took over from CM Newton, Bruce took over from Tony friggin Barbee and Jeff Lebo.

Go look at the programs from the last 6-8 years or so prior to them taking the reins. Wimp just hopped on the train and kept rolling, Bruce had to rebuild a broke down locomotive and go find some boxcars to hitch on to it, then rebuild the tracks like Sherman had marched through Georgia.

I'm afraid you are the one missing the boat. Basketball is getting scary in the state of Alabama. Pearl is making the proverbial silk purse out of the sow's ear. Comparing the 2 is fruitless at this point. They both have the nation's attention and everyone in the state seems happy we have a sport to follow after football, besides spring football. Lighten up, Frances.
