Because when Gershwin became popular (on the hells of other modernists like Ravel and Poulenc), many thought concert music would make a shift to incorporate more elements of jazz and topical popular music. It did to an extent, but then WWII happened and after that the Darmstadt serialists took over...

Go see a neurologist and have two nerve conduction studies done on your median nerve, 6-8 weeks apart. If the second test shows degeneration, then it's carpal tunnel.
