The College Football Playoff Board of Managers has adopted the 5 + 7 model for the upcoming 12-team playoff next season, replacing the 6 + 6 format that was originally proposed.

The 12-team playoff will now include the five highest-ranked conference champions plus the next seven highest-ranked teams in the CFP rankings.

With the downgrade of the Pac 12 and the Big 12 and the overall weakness of the ACC in football, the 5 + 7 makes a lot more sense than the 6 + 6. That 6th best conference champ some years (and maybe even the 4th and 5th best) could be pretty average teams.
