While the new 12-team College Football Playoff will begin this upcoming season, a 14-team playoff is already being considered starting in 2026.

During the latest episode of ESPN's College GameDay podcast, Rece Davis kicked around the idea of moving to a 16-team playoff. Per Athlon Sports:
quote:

“Since we have expanded beyond the very small playoff, I would prefer just going ahead and going to 16, playing the first two rounds on campus, and eliminating conference championship games,” Davis said. “Each of these mega conferences would play a 10-game schedule in-conference and then not required but strongly encouraged to play another power team from the outside. Whether that’s crossover SEC/Big Ten or ACC, Big 12, whatever.”

Might as well do 16 as 12. If you are going to kill off the bowls do it right. Plus each team plays the same number of games. But you know no matter how many teams get in someone will get screwed.

I don't hate it. Especially the part of getting rid of the SEC championship and having the first two rounds on campus (leading to some unique matchups that we don't otherwise see on campus). We've already burnt down tradition, so screw it, at least make everything as interesting as possible.
