Our first SEC title and Sugar Bowl win in 20 years was in 2002 against Florida State.

2007 - We were playing the best football at the end of the year. We blew out a bad June Jones' coached Hawaii squad.

2012- Two yards away from a national championship. We would have smoked Notre Dame like Bama did.

2017- jury not back yet, but off to a great start

I was about to say "1997 says hi"

But we were 10-2

10-2 in 1992 as well

1987? a "shitty" 9-3

We all know what the deal was in 1982...

Gotta go all the way back to '77 to break this trend

You may be on to something

eta - just noticed the 77 in your username

Coincidence???

I'd say good to very good. Great is a little too strong of a word to throw around.

'02 and '12 were very close to great but fell just a bit short IMO...

I agree. I was just thinking about how it seems every five years we are e do better than normal. Based on that, we should be due this year. I know the 05 championship throws a wrench in my logic, but LSU really sucked that night :-). I want ever forget that WV game.

2005 doesn't throw a wrench in anything. The 5 year rule still stands. 2005 just means that we don't always suck the other 4 years.

I wonder if the Gumps have/had dumb conversations like this relating to the years between between 1992 and 2009?

I've often wondered about this...it does seem somewhat true....probably a co,binational of young new talent and having enough upperclassmen to keep them grounded......

The 5 year plan is all we got. Hopefully Kirby changes that.

This is the norm for many teams due to lack of depth and recruiting practices. You have a good team and then the Juniors and Seniors move on and it takes several seasons for the new recruits to develop into a complete team. Also, we often did not have a full roster under Richt due his recruiting practices that did not allow for normal attrition. This of course hurts team depth making the team more reliant on the experienced first-team players. Add it uncommon attrition due to bad luck/excessive injuries and players who get into trouble or fail academically and you have the formula for a crappy team even though the recruiting rankings suggest that you are underachieving.

This is in sharp contrast to championship level teams like Alabama that reload every season due to better recruiting and recruiting practices that allow for typical attrition. We are becoming more of an Alabama type team under Smart's leadership.

We should have gone undefeated in the regular season
that year.UF was the JTIII disaster and we gave AU 2 TD's off turnovers and lost by a point.

WVU game was a disaster though.
