How the hell can students unionize when they're not employed by the university?

That's the argument that the NLRB upheld: students that compete in athletics are, in fact, employees and should be given the same consideration.

Where are these kids going to get the money to pay taxes on their scholarships? They can't afford to even go out to dinner says most of them. What about students on the Hope, Merit, etc. won't they be considered employees too since they are on scholarship? They help the University profit too. I really hope this actually happens.

That's the big thing everyone seems to be glossing over. Everyone is looking at the benefits and completely neglecting to realize how shite works in the real world. If you get paid a wage, you get issued a W2. If you get issued a W2, you report that in taxes. If 600+ student athletes are being handed W2s, the athletic depts are no longer tax exempt. When ADs are shelling out tons of cash to the IRS, see how long they opt to keep their doors open.

The athletes that aren't big names and don't receive some sort of monetary compensation beyond their scholarships may be lucky enough to get money back on their return. But the big name guys... hope they're prepared to pay out the nose for any and all income they receive (I have a feeling a few will end up in jail for tax evasion simply due to ignorance as to how the process works).

ETA: Odds that these kids invest their money in an accountant or, at least, in Turbotax?

Precisely why I hope this happens. It won't effect anyone other than Northwestern, but the 17,18,19,20 y/o kids will realize what a sham Unions are and why they are not needed. Hopefully that will help get them removed permanently, EVERYWHERE!

frick Unions and frick Todd Grantham too.

I listened to an interview with Ramiga Huma(?)
(he's a former UCLA player who started this thing)on 680 and he stated that players were already taxed on stipend checks they recieve...had no idea that was the case.

He was also stated that eventually they would collect union dues and also talked about lifetime
medical insurance, workmans comp and some other stuff that was pretty far fetched.

Where do most of these kids get this entitlement mentality. I don't just mean these football players either. It seems like most young people(I'm not that old myself,33) these days feel like the world owes them something. Life sucks sometimes and you don't always get what you want. Companies across the US make millions of dollars off the backs of employees that don't have near the perks these players have. Playing college football is a damn privilege. If you don't like the way things are, tough. Don't fricking play.

Free room and board, free pussy, not having to live in a cold climate. Oh, and they wouldn't "be a badass" in Europe - they'd be irrelevant. If you want to be a badass in Europe, drive F1, or failing that, play soccer. Football is basically a non-entity.

It will be interesting to see how most Universities' mandatory diversity hiring programs will change things, then.

Your starting Left Tackle - Nguyen Ap Le! All 5'6" and 130 lbs of him. A fullback with Muscular Dystrophy? ADA compliant, baby!

And if it goes to state schools....no more freebies for players. They'll be state employees subject to anti-corruption statutes and all that fun stuff.

The anthropology school is under the Franklin umbrella (arts and sciences) I believe. The Forestry school, is important because Timber is one of the biggest industries in the state, but in general, outside of GA, or CA, a forestry degree is worthless. Hell, even in GA or CA, a forestry degree is worthless unless you are going to work at the family farm and Granddaddy said you had to get your Warnell degree or you couldn't get your slice of the pie.

Forestry degrees aren't worthless but certainly there are more lucrative paths. Oregon, Washington, and maybe even Maine have more timber than GA or CA though.
