Reading the Spurrier thread on tSECR got me thinking again. What would UGA football look like if after the 1980 season, Vince takes the AU job and we replace him with Erk? Would we be talking a dynasty with 3 straight NCs? Would we be the same? Or would we be worse off?

I know the players loved Erk. Some would say more than Vince. If he could have willed them the same way he did his players at GSU could we have had the same success?

I think it would have been about the same. UGA did play for 2 NC's remember... I don't think either of the coaches were beating Clemson in 81.

Would have been interesting to see what Erk would have done offensively.I highly doubt he changes the offense from the I while HW is still there but maybe after.

Lets not forget the blue bloods in the AA also wanted Pat Dye at UGA if VD bolted. Not a slam dunk Erk gets the job.

I'm not sure he changes from the I at all. I just think the team would have played to an even higher level for him.

You couldn't have played at a higher level in '81,'82 or '83...who knows after that though. We were pretty much stuck in the 8-4 zone between 84-88.

You can always play at a higher level.

I think if Vince left in 84 as he hinted, and Erk took over, UGA would be considered the team of the 80's instead of Miami.

That's a possibility. Too bad Erk didn't get his shot at UGA.

All of the players loved Erk. Most didn't even like VD. He is not very likeable. Erk ran the entire team not just the D in all aspects bedsides coaching.

With the talent we had on D they would have been better than they were ImO. That Clemson game and the Pitt And PSU games were lost as mainly due to poor coaching. We win at least one of those sugar bowls of not both. Turnovers killed us v clemson. Erk would have correct that in game. Dooley had terrible game plans in the two sugar bowls. Dooley was not very good at making adjustments and lacked an elite offensive mind. If Herschel couldn't do it we were doomed. Take Herschel off that team in 1980 and Georgia is typical Dooley 7-5 8-4. We lose to UT, UF, SC and one more

Coach Dooley didn't do much coaching his last 4 years. He recruited, but he recruited in a way that it was like..hey, God is here momma, your boy would do well to play for me...
He sat up in that observation tower during practice and occasionally came down like Ceaser coming into the pits to meat his gladiators. He was hanging on for 200 and then a run at Governor. After the 85 scandal I think he just lost touch.

Well, we took Herschel off the 82 team and ended up being a top 5 team in 83.

How'd that happen?

Explain to me again how Erk would have "corrected" our turnovers in the Clemson game?

I have thought about this a bunch. I think we would have had a dynasty

Erk was the man

We would have practiced the passing game and actually been more proficient. The turnovers were interceptions.

That is one action.

Dooley was way behind his time. Clemson knew this and stacked the d to stop him. The two sugar bowls are better examples.
